Sikorsky S-97 Raider Ground Tests Today

Yeah I get that but Navy leadership won't even let us fulfill existing CSAR and SOF RFFs so why even bother? My approach is probably a bit too cynical but if the leadership won't let us out of their "sight" then wtf good does long range CSAR do? Are we really going through all of this added...

Sikorsky S-97 Raider Ground Tests Today

Can anyone explain the need for FVL to me? I mean, I get the cool factor and the increased range being useful but 90% of what we do consists of flying laps around the boat and vertrep so how does spending extra and adding this much extra mechanical complexity benefit us? Wouldn't a fly-by-wire...

    USN HT's a calamity

We were actually talking about this today. The TH57 doesn't exactly set you up for success in the 60. Great VFR trainer but the stick skills don't exactly translate over when it's time to fly something with a good AFCS system on it.

    USN HT's a calamity

I harp on this continuously with CAT1s. I literally tell them to just let go and stop screwing it up. The bird with fly itself.

    USN HT's a calamity

-I always cleared the rotor arc before pulling off the GENs too. Not something that's in NATOPS necessarily or anything anyone ever taught me but there is that note about the AFCS kicking off and rotors dropping to 4 feet over the deck so I just don't mess with it. Wait 'til everyone's clear...

My personal favorite is "I'll get the TACAN while you get the RADALT". They're like one line item apart in the DIAG page. How's about you just do them both while you're in there?

    USN HT's a calamity

I will say this about my IFR training: it's saved my ass more than once in the 60 and I couldn't imagine doing the type of flying that I've done in the Navy without it. If nothing else, just the basic skills of scanning, trusting instruments, and translating that into not ending up upside down...

NEWS Air Force leadership talks frankly about pilot retention

It may be "healthy" over here in helo land for now but the writing is on the wall. Regionals are starting to see that picking up helo dudes is a viable way to fill seats and many of our JOs are massively disenfranchised with the "mission". It might mean 2 years or so at a lower paying regional...

What do you think about Navy food?

That's an old wives tale. Steak and lobster happens pretty normally. Although it's more like leather cow ass and steamed ocean la-cocka-roacha. I usually stick to the chicken/whatever other option on steak and lobster night.
  14. J

    Why are O4s considered JOs?

To be fair, the Navy was so incredibly half-hearted about the CWO program that it never stood a chance.

    Marine Pilot VS Navy Pilot

Flight Physical is the first week of OCS and is VERY particular. Lots of guys get the NAMI Whammy that week. Have your shit in a sock before you get there. Also, the rigors of OCS (shitty diet, lack of sleep) cause people's bodies to do weird stuff. One guy in my class got popped for Anemia...

Thank God. I love Sigs. Glocks feel like they're made out of legos to me. And the M9 is a paperweight as far as I'm concerned. Worst pistol I've ever shot.

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

Paying, effectively, the sales tax on your car EVERY year is excessive. And no thanks on becoming a VA resident just so I can cast my vote in the welfare state that is the 757 area code in the hopes that it'll make some kind of change. I think I'll stay in FL and reap the benefits of 0 income...

Any downside to becoming a Florida resident?

VA isn't much better. My wife registered her 3 year old 4runner here after moving down. Promptly received a property tax bill totaling $1000. Needless to say it was promptly re-registered in FL for a grand total of $75. I sent a nice email letting them know that the vehicle was no longer and...

Pardon my ignorance here, but this seems like CA essentially trying to collect taxes on a vehicle sold there despite it not ever being registered in CA by the buyer? Or am I mistaken here? Also, there's a million ways around this kind of thing. For example, I'm a SC home of record guy, so I'd...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

This. So much this. FWIW, I think everyone has adopted the big boy rules in regards to IPads. My skipper was sitting in the FBO on stop #3 of our CCX downloading ForeFlight after he saw me using it and what it could do.

Should I go for Marines or Navy?

The status of AC shouldn't be your concern. Lifestyle and officership should be the primary concern. Many communities in the Navy have AC that are in perfectly good shape. Jets may not exactly be one of them. All these things are cyclical. By the time you get into something gray, most of our...

Was flying for the Navy/Marines worth it?

Ive seen it amongst the DHs too. One DH tells us to log something a certain way as OIC and them makes fun of another DH right in front of the CO for saying the same thing when the second DH was OIC. I think it's more pertinent these days because of O4 board selections and flying orders being...

Was flying for the Navy/Marines worth it?

I'll chime in and say that, overall, it has been a good thing. There are definitely very good reasons that people leave whether it be to go to another service or a civilian job. It's not all sunshine and roses and there's A LOT more to it than the flying and the further you go along in this...

And that, my friend, is why your US Navy is merely a handicapped, incompetent version of it's former self. PS...we did the same shit on deployment. God forbid someone have to count rounds to make sure they're all there or actually know WTF they're doing with that clearing barrel in the ready...

    Increased PFT and CFT Standards

I like the idea of exempting people who get an "outstanding" (or whatever) from BCA/BMI standards. I feel like that would be a good idea for the Navy to incentivize doing well on the PRT.

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Its not about "going to sea". It's about being manipulated into doing jobs that have nothing to do with making you a better aviator or officer under the guise that it does. Like I said, if you want to fill a job and make someone 'take one for the team' then just call a spade a spade.
  38. J

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Yeah I got that from it too. But then you've gotta ask yourself: if 90% of making to O4 is about those first 2 tours as a JO (before you even get a FITREP out of the disassociated tour) then is there really a need to take that one for the team?

It happens. More often than you think. You don't understand what I'm saying and you're taking it out of context. The conversation is a little deeper than the obvious facts you mentioned. Everyone realizes that readiness is a big deal. That's not what we're talking about here. We're talking...

I mean multiple #1 EP LTs who've never been in charge of anyone or even seen an EVAL. Not to mention #2/3/MP... Agreed. Like I said, I'm not saying people should NEVER go to the boat. But why, as a LT who spent his entire JO tour as part of an airwing, am I being sold this myopic career path...

New brownout approach procedures / training?

Really? I've had minimal EGI problems with the Sierra. Only 1 or 2 that I can think of since I've been flying it. I don't use it doors off. Only PTT for doors off. I use VOX for normal stuff like FCFs and Fam flights a lot though.
  44. J

New brownout approach procedures / training?

Way ahead of you on that one. I've found the duct tape makes little to no actual difference in VOX for me. The m-frames are legit though. a lot of guys like the ESS Supressors too.
  45. J

New brownout approach procedures / training?

Yeah it's great. There are things we need to do if we go doors off more often like buying everyone unidirectional mics or facial shields (like every other service does). Personally, I wouldn't hate going doors off for everything. I know it's them Someone needs to clue them into the fact that...
  46. J

New brownout approach procedures / training?

Been doing it for a few months now. It's the ONLY way to fly when doing brownout. Doors off is the solution to brownout. We just need to lose the idiotic aspects of the IFC that require removing soundproofing.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

In this day and age, it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to move a significant amount of it to the sim despite the fact that we all know it's not the same quality of training no matter what you do in there.

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Sage advice and I agree with all of the above. I do agree with what Masterbates said though. Going into the front office and telling them you just want VTs or whatever around here (i.e. not rag or wit) will get you put at the back of the pack. That's not how it should work but that's how it is...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

There's definitely a huge gap between CVN RW guys and Exp RW guys. It's pretty night and day. Most people just don't realize it because we're all "HSC" so we must all do the same thing but that's not exactly true. FWIW, I'm a carrier guy.
