    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

No doubt. I think P3 guys would probably say something similar. If all was right with the world then some of you jet guys would carrying the load on these boat jobs. I mean, you are the ones that are predominantly making CO, XO of the carriers. But for whatever reason or drug deal that exists, I...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Well then there's a massive discrepancy between your community and the helo community in that Deparment. Gripes? Really? So a guy can't critically think about the way we do business without it being called 'bitching'. WTI is a weird situation. They somehow have managed to create a situation...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Look at said Golden Path. Look at what happens to guys who care more about flying than doing shitty boat jobs. They get booted. Look at what happens when you tell your front office that all you want to do is fly. There's something to what Masterbates said about telling your front office that you...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

You're a little off the mark here man. I never said anything about "flying your WHOLE career". I said we need to stop acting like wanting to fly is something to be ashamed of. And I never said that people couldn't be taken out of the cockpit. I said that they should stop BS-Ing us with promises...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

I wouldn't say it's bullshit by any means but, at some point, it started becoming something like "officer first, shame on you for wanting to fly and not wanting to drive a boat".
  6. J

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

I was being a bit generic when I used the term "all" in regards to that statement but I don't know too many pilots who long for the days when they're put out to pasture so they can manage some PMA-something. What bothers me about this is the bigger problem here. For some extremely strange...

    SECNAV to Implement Sweeping Changes

Or they're all just doing that shit because that's what they think/know they have to say/do to get their 20. I'm pretty sure there's plenty of people around here that would be just fine with flying and not having to be the acquisitions officer for (insert bloated government program here) or...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

You're making WAY too big of a stink out of the 'analog' gauges. If you can't get through the TH-57 instrument syllabus because you had to learn to move your eyes around more then you shouldn't be wearing wings. Needles are needles and learning how to read them and know WTF is going on is pretty...

    NEWS Drop-in wonder engine?

I was thinking about this and the only thing I can think of is maybe if you actively control the compressor vanes then you could optimize the intake for higher PA. But as others mention, I think we're also talking about better rotor blades being just as necessary as better engines also (?).
  11. J

    NEWS Drop-in wonder engine?

This. I'd love to have better engines in the Sierra for the overland/desert heat stuff. It'd be nice to not have to stress out about which bird Mx is giving you to vertrep with in the gulf. The guys in charge and jet guys don't always seem to understand that Pa goes down drastically when OAT/DA...

Waste to pay for private pilot's license?

120HP cessna at 80kts (give or take) compared to a 1200HP at 120kts. It's pretty different but the principles are still the same.

Waste to pay for private pilot's license?

I'd say getting through your solo would be helpful. Getting some time in a decent simulator doing IFR stuff would also be helpful. Knowing how to read the needles was EXTREMELY helpful to me in primary and advanced. I saw numerous people struggling with BIs (basic instrument maneuvers) and RIs...

    Marine Jet Fleet Health

Don't worry about this. Fly what you want to fly. If you want jets, go fly jets. Disclaimer: I'm a helo guy and can't speak to the problems facing the hornet community.

    Weight waiver for jets? (underweight)

Is eating a lot between now and primary a possibility? I'm pretty sure the honey bbq chicken sandwich at whataburger is about 10000 calories. One of those a day will keep the anthro waivers away.

    misdemeanor for reckless driving

It's a class 3 misdemeanor. You should absolutely have reported it to your squadron. People probably wouldn't have cared all that much but posting on here about it like that is probably not the best thing to be doing. Edit: in VA it's a class 3. Not sure about other states.
  18. J

    misdemeanor for reckless driving

Not to be a dick, but that statement kinda makes it sound like you knowingly did 83/35 and didn't give a shit because you wouldn't get punished. I'd refrain from putting that one in the OCS package. I always brief my new enlisted about the laws in VA since many of them are from out of state...

    misdemeanor for reckless driving

That's pretty much how 64 is around Norfolk/VB. It's a 55mph limit but most people do 65-70 so you're about 5mph from a reckless driving ticket at any given time if you're going with traffic.

Herein lies the rub. Stupid stuff like this these days is right up there with banging the admirals daughter on his front door step.

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

I don't know about a "fraction of our time". My squadron wasted what my math showed to be approx 700 man hours on ONE GMT because it was a mandatory 3 hour presentation. Not to mention the man hours wasted on doing the computer based ones. That's at least another 300 man hours every fiscal...

USN Pros and Cons of Jets/Props/Helos

I'm sure there are guys there who give people a hard time about wanting jets but I never dealt with any of them. Navy CSAR det gets rescue

Which is why I worded the title the way I did. Like I said, I see the argument. But there are those in this mans navy who would see us completely ditch the overland missions altogether just so they don't have to deal with the risk involved in TERF training and so they can CYA. Navy CSAR...

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

My first CO was a lot like that and it was my favorite quality about him.
  26. J

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

I don't know about 'more frequently' but other services have the convenience of having entire helo squadrons more or less dedicated to CSAR. That's not something we can get away with in the Navy. Not to mention that our primary focus is supposed to be overwater (according to the admirals).
  27. J

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

SAR in general isn't something that happens every day. It's a contingency mission and a given helo squadron might only get a SAR once every few years (or more). Not to mention CSAR.
  28. J

USN Pros and Cons of Jets/Props/Helos

The best thing to do is to ask the guys you fly with in primary. There will be an assortment of guys from all of the communities there and they are a great resource for that kind of thing.

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

It's not overconfidence. Trust me. Just glad to see our crews getting to do something good over there. If you knew me, you'd know this. I don't think anything in my post indicated otherwise. I will say this though, I know who is over there and they took all flavors of pilots. Not just the O4s...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

I get what you're saying and that's why I phrased the title the way I did. In my mind, yes. But I see the argument. These guys were very close to ending up on the wrong side of the wrong line and barely made it to a safe zone. In CSAR we have DARS and SAFE zones for this very reasons and we...

    Navy CSAR det gets rescue

Not saying that it means we're hear to win the war. Some very important people tried fight having the Navy put a CSAR det in place and say that a 'fleet squadron' couldn't do it (along with various other BS reasons) so having them actually get used in that capacity kinda makes them eat their...

    NEWS Syria Combat Mission

I've only seen the SOF guys with them. Honestly, I wouldn't want them. My peripheral vision is an asset when I'm landing the helo and I'm often looking under the goggles to help identify towers/wires or even just get a more realistic idea of what things in front of me look like.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Not dumb at all. As said, it's a minimal transition to go from single to dual. The principles are still the same. Nr is governed by the computer. Collective still controls pitch. Yeah ....ummm...the "skeeters"/florabama/skanktank natives. Don't forget to change your residency to FL while you're there. No state income tax and you can keep it in FL the rest of the time you're in the military. Not to mention the whole car sales tax loophole. I just saved you thousands...

    Highest time Apache pilot retires

And here I thought that I knew the helo pretty well. I guess that's the sort of mindset that you can get away with when you aren't trying to raise every pilot in the command to be the next XO and CO. Not saying that the Army is hands down better than the Navy at everything but the are some...

    Question about Navy Insurance

I'll echo what the others said. Waiting a few months to go to OCS is better than screwing it away by lying it getting hurt. You could also end up spending 3 months or more in H-class which is much worse than just waiting.
  46. J

Gotcha. So MTP is more synonymous to maintenance officer progression than just the qual. Interesting to see how differently we all skin the cat.

    Jets v Helos

There's no right answer to that question. You're gone a lot in helo land too. The last 12 months has been our down cycle (so to speak) and I've easily been gone 3 out of 12 months this year on dets and whatnot. Some of those are good deals but most often they are 2 or 3 week long boat dets. I've...
