I can see where you're coming from, but I don't have much faith in the average American kid anyway. I think an event like the December 26th Tsunami is more likely to be forgoteen; in the Western world at least. It may have had 100's of thousands of deaths but you don't hear anyone talking about...

(Apparently) New Photo: Airbus 380 Cockpit

For those who have experienced it, what's it like flying with a stick rather than a yoke?
  5. MattWSU

Got the yoke and pedals a few days ago. They are damn awesome and I spend way more time on simulations now. Thinking about getting Falcon 4.0 Allied Force, anyone know if this is good?

    First actual solo...haha

Congrats Man. Not too far from mine.

Landed today, wasn't hard at all but was definitely much more fast-paced than the rest of the flight was.

Yeah, I really think these will help me get some "air time" in without actually having to fly.

Ah. I noticed I don't even have the other port on my computer. Will have to be USB. Just need to find the best deal.

I saw a set of yoke and pedals on ebay for about $75.00. If I didn't have a V8 and gas wasn't so expensive I would've bought it. I just want to practice landing to get a feel for it. Was supposed to land today but it was way too gusty...flew a Cessna 152 last time. I'm pretty tall so decided to...

Ah, just reinstalled FS. How do they simulate pedals? Gonna have to borrow a joystick from a friend as mine sucks.

First time, eh? How'd you do? I'm reading up on it in my little manual. Trying to memorize the steps so as to impress. :)

I'm pretty damn nervous to land. I know it won't be for quite some time but I'm unsure as to its difficulty. When my instructor lands, its like nothing to him and he hasn't mentioned it being particularly difficult. Am I making a big deal out of something small?

I'm at a Part 141 school. Its a place thats designated for lessons and my Instructor is their to do just that. He's teaching me how to get in the habit of doing certain things and not doing others. So far, he really seems like he cares but It's only been two lessons so we'll see.
  17. MattWSU

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

Just finished my first actual "lesson". It was a doozie. Learning the turns and trying to get my banks just right. He said I was doing great but need to work on flying better with one hand. If any of you have been stationed at Whidbey I'm flying from Paine and flew over Camano Island and the...

Oh believe me, I play enough fast paced video games, way too many. Work out and run every day, trying to mix it up. I am not so great when it comes to academics either but I just have to study and do well on the tests and hope for the best. That was amazing to actually fly. I'm not content with...

Just went on my first introductory flight at flight school. It was probably one of the most incredible experiences ever. Feeling so free and seeing familiar places from above. Needless to say; DAMN ****ING AWESOME.

I'm currently looking into a private pilot's license. The school/airfield (which is about a 30 minute drive from my house) is "141 Qualified". I've heard of 61 and 141 qualification and know it has something to do with how the class follows the FAA syllabus. Can someone elaborate further on what...

Just got in touch with the OPO. He was talking to me about medical issues, the ASTB, as well as scholarships with NROTC and BDCP. He said unless my GPA goes way up, I will not be competitive for the BDCP. However, he says if I study well for the SAT's and score high, then I could possibly be...

Aha, I've been through Olympia several times. I called the officer recruitment phone # but the ORO doesn't seem to be in right now.

This community on this forum has given me more information than I could have hoped for and I really thank you guys for that. I'll stay optimistic, theres just so many questions I have but I'll save some for the ORO (was away earlier) :) . Godspeed, I'm assuming you live up north of me (I'm in...

At least now I have an idea of whats expected. Gonna give the ORO in Seattle a call today and talk to him about colleges, classes, BDCP, etc. At this point my optimism is fading.

At this point, my cumulative GPA cannot reach 3.0. If a superb SAT score but low GPA (2.0-2.5) will still keep me competitive for NROTC two-year scholarship, then I will work my balls off to get that. From your experience, will high SAT scores counter-act enough against my low GPA to keep me...

And you're suggesting that high school academics will have a distinguishable effect on me being selected for which position by the Navy?

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

I figured I'd start small (with this forum) so I can get an idea of what the steps to becoming a military pilot are like. I want to go to a recruiter with a broad outline in my mind, not just a bunch of jumbled facts. As for my grades, I am planning to get more than 45 and up to 90 credits at...

Junior in High School, Interested in Career as Fighter Pilot.

I say Washington State because my fathers service in the military qualifies dependents (me) for tuition costs covered by the VA. My brother, who is four years older than me and transferring to a four-year this fall, told me that the GI Bill does not cover tuition for out-of-state colleges but I...

Wow, that is indeed crazy. So how do you like ERAU? I'm curious as to what the classes leading up to an AE degree are like. There is only one decent school (that I know of) that offers an AE degree in WA state and that is UW which is extremely competitve. Do you think you made the best choice in...

I have a lot of interest in Embry-Riddle. It has the "#1 Aeronautical Engineering school in the nation" which in my eyes would give me an edge and I would still really enjoy a non-pilot job as an Engineer at Boeing, etc. Any alumni of the school or people who are currently enrolled on here?
  33. MattWSU

PLC seems promising. Is it just an alternative to OCS that you do before your graduation of college? BDCP also seems promising, if I am indeed guaranteed a flight spot. Do most universities support BDCP? I don't quite understand if it's a program offered by the Navy to anyone or a program...

I am definitely content with being a pilot of any military (for now) fixed-wing aircraft but less content with being a helo pilot. I have to put one ambition ahead of another and being a fighter pilot is on the top of my list. Followed by President...J/K :) Matt

I'm leaning towards a degree in some kind of engineering as that would give me an alternate career choice if I don't make it as a pilot. What would be some other degree choices as well as some recommended universities (I'm already in community college so it would be for 2 years at a university)...

I went to Marineofficer.com and after submitting my application it said, "Unfortunately you must be 17 years old to enlist in the Marine Corps. Please ask for information again when you turn 17" etc. etc. Don't know where to go from here. Matt
  38. MattWSU

Being a Marine Pilot does seem a bit more realistic. I thought about it but prior to researching did not even know the Marines had fighter jets. I think I'll go to the marineofficer.com website and check it out. The main thing my mom is trying to tell me is that a recruiter will basically say...

A lot of these acronyms I'm not familiar with. Can someone englighten me as to what they stand for? Particularly OSO. Super Hornet, do you think you can elaborate a bit more on how you got your flight spot? Thanks for the replies, Matt

Hey, I'm a 16 year-old Junior in High School, and I am looking for a career as a fighter pilot. I was hoping to get a bit of information that is specific towards my own situation. During my Freshmen year, I was quite immature and ignorant about the big picture and I slacked, received...
