    Female soldiers eyed for combat

In aviation terms....we'd call this one a "Luffberry"...a death spiral to the deck! My opinion on this topic from the aviation side of the house (can't speak on ground combat as I don't do that...) is simple...the machine cares not who flies it. It simply responds to flight control inputs...

Why are the engines on the F-18 so close??

Some good explanations above as well. I'm no aero major, but the spoilers on an F-14 deploy up (a bit ~6 or 8 Degrees) all the time when DLC is on during a landing. You need to fly a bit faster (6 kts), but they allow you to use a vernier wheel on the stick to roll in lift as the spoilers...
  14. Schnugg

Why are the engines on the F-18 so close??

The F-14 has spoliers (4 on each wng) as well, no ailerons at all. We use our differential tails and spoliers to roll. One drawback is when you make a quick stick input on the ball, the spoilers destroy some lift which is not what you want, so every lateral stick moevement is typically...

    P-3's on a carrier????

Good info on the P-2. It sort of looks like a whale crossed with an S-3. A big plane for a carrier ops. I think this may get confused with the Grumman S-2 Tracker, pre-cursor to the S-3.

Why are the engines on the F-18 so close??

Why are the engines on the F-18 so close??

First off it's Hollywood, so it's all BS. We don't turn with rudders, they control yaw. We use asymmetric differential stabs or horizontal tails to roll the jet (a tiny bit of rudder) then when our lift vector is where we want to go we do a smooth pull with both horizontal tails taking an even...

Why are the engines on the F-18 so close??

Actually.... Actually....we do this because the nose strut compresses another 4 inches or so at cat launch (aside from the regular kneel). If you had your head back against the head rest it would get tosses forward, then be flung back and bang hard against the headbox. Not what you need on...

It's a "shoe" thing....don't even bother trying to figure it out. This ain't no sh*t but, ....The Stennis once lost it's little wooden "wheel" during PIA overhaul in 99 and had to get underway with a metal stick where the wheel would have been until a new wheel could be fabricated. They...

    F-16 Strafing School

I doubt he was strafing the school as a target. More than likely he was arming up on the range and a short caused a hot trigger to discharge the gun...only until I assume he quickly disarmed the master arm. That would explain the short burst of rounds...and their weak kinetic energy on the...
