    Current NATOPS

Awww what the hell...I'll ruin it for you. Go to this site, get an account and study your ass off instead of drinking and windsurfing. This recommendation brought to you by the Army guy who now only wishes he could be in P'cola or south Texas instead of Ft. Rucker for aviation training.

Origin of the phrase "(pick your aircraft) driver"

OK..a serious answer (followed by a better answer). I use -hawk Pilot but I have used -hawk Driver because I have flown both Seahawks and Blackhawks. The medics in the back of our aircraft are more full of themselves than the worst pointy nose fliers. To them, we are just the ambulance drivers.

    I Love Helos

I had a 9 year break in service and was 42 when I joined the guard. I've got 22 good years and over 6000 points. I'm just sticking around because A) I still like it and B) I'm packing away points 365/year as an AGR.

    I Love Helos

Consider a transition to the ARNG. Most guard units do water bucket training annually and fight fires periodically. Recently we had a fairly junior M-day PC get picked up for a forestry job flying UH-1s.

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

For me, the frustration occurs only after the student shows strong defense mechanisms, resulting in his refusal to listen or follow instructions. At that point there is a stagnation in learning. In one of the most extreme cases I've seen, the student made an IG complaint against the instructor...

Stupid Questions about Naval Aviation (Part 3)

I can TOTALLY identify with your sentiments. THIS (see below) happened during one the simulator periods I instructed. I had to take a picture because I couldn't believe this is how he solved his turning-the-wrong-way problem..

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

It seems the Air Force guy I was talking to probably didn't know better. I asked about it just last week and he told be they had already bought it (Baylander). Given the modifications that were required to make Baylander able to land an Osprey, it makes sense that it is probably a different...

Doing research - after action rescue/survival reports

I was disappointed. I thought you meant, "This river don't go to Aintry. You done taken a wrong turn." All of the survival gear and PLB are great, but let's not forget that water and training is by far the most important. Last summer we had a soldier in the BLC land nav course (training was...

What are the current NVD's for helos?

It's been awhile. I remember one of the squadrons at Mayport getting a mod that included blue filters that were stuck on with Velcro, or the military's version, hook and pile. I never actually got a chance to fly NVGs in the Navy. I assumed it was more a color issue than bulb type. Speaking of...

What are the current NVD's for helos?

All of this stuff to change the color of lights in the Seahawk? Shhhh, don't tell anyone we have four MFDs with...wait for it...multi colored displays!
  21. RobLyman

What are the current NVD's for helos?

Perspective...no facts. I can say that continuing to stick to tried and true instrument techniques was/is not a bad idea. Teaching Army aviators to land on a ship during the day is fun. It is scary as hell at night.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Off of the original topic: On a pre-mob we had to spend a day learning to inspect vehicles coming in through a security check point. I asked the SGT why we had to learn this. I pointed out that if we get to the point I have to inspect vehicles coming onto the FOB, we are in a BAAAD way. He said...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

I spend a great deal of my time working with the product produced at Ft. Rucker. It is inferior to what I flew with as an FRS instructor in the late 80s. Try as I may, I just can't chalk that up to starting in a fixed wing aircraft. It has a great deal more to do with what I believe to be a...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Chuck's reddit post is fairly accurate. The article in smallwarsjournal, not as much. The author doesn't appear to have hands on experience with brand new aviators coming out of Rucker. My disagreements with the article warrant a separate post. One big difference is the maintenance program. It...

Roll of ship when landing on carrier?

Moriah? In our days we just called it the helo DET. As LSO we constantly tried to offer the OOD solutions to the wind/pitch/roll envelope. We were told to "Knock it off!" We were just using a wiz wheel. They were using the wind hunting circle approach.

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

Clearly I have been out of the Navy for awhile, but this seems very confusing. I get the transition from HSL to HSM...pretty much the same missions just upgraded capabilities. But now there is HSM expeditionary (traditional HSL deployments) and HSM on CV. So what is HSC? It's not HS and HC...

When you forget about that whole "rotor wash" thing. Oops . . .

    Best Naval Aviation movies

Well, it has been about 28+ years since the incident (1988-89 ish), and 22 years since my last runup in the Seahawk. 60R time in sim was with rotors already turning. In the 60 A/L/M we do the HYD LEAK check at idle. I guess I forgot about the differences. Since it was both of our first times...

    Officer Photos making a return

Run away as fast as you can! The Army does this nonsense. I get it. "We can use the photo to screen out shitbags." That's the good part. The bad part, at least for the Army, is it turns into a nightmare in getting your office record brief (ORB) to match/sync with your photo. I took my latest...

    NEWS UAV 'Combat' Flight Time?!

If we are talking Air Medal-ish types of awards, than your 90% figure is pretty far off in some communities. Don't feel bad. I was told the same thing back in the day. In fact, while doing my CCDG tour my Air Ops boss requested I put flight hours and landings as the first bullet on my FITREP input.
