Has The Navy Gone Geedunk Crazy?

I completely agree. Saw guys going in and out the gate in MRAPS all of the time. These were the same guys we might be or actually were called to pickup after an IED/EFP. I know most got nothing like a BSM. However, the doctors at our TMC who never left the wire and only had a few casualties to...

Oh, and remember... next Friday is Hawaiian shirt day. So you know, if you want to, go ahead and wear a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.

    The great Helo debate

LOL. That is one of the things I like about the UH/HH-60M. Two ARC-201 FMs plus two ARC-231 FM/VHF/UHF/LMR/Marine band radios. One ARC-231 is even configured for Satcom. xmid, You are right. Every time I've talk to Sikorsky they have said the same about both Navy and Army procurement. New Army...

    The great Helo debate

Until you actually have to do it. I've lost my #2 hydraulics 3 times, twice to a single spot ship. Once unaided at night to a ship. Those hand flying skills and EPs can save your life and should be a given before you are even considered for HAC.

    Army "Right Sizing"

The link above is great. Having transitioned successfully to the civilian world and then back to the military almost 10 years later, I can say there is a lot of truth in it. Also conducting many interview in my civilian career and now in my pseudo civilian/guard career I feel I am very qualified...

That was the idea I was getting at.

    Goodbye to the "Kiowa Warrior"?

Specifically what's not going happen? Will UAVs/OH-58s never be put in that situation?,Will a UAV/OH-58 never be able to hit a target in that situation?

    Goodbye to the "Kiowa Warrior"?

Giving enlisted weapons release authority in the Army isn't nearly as problematic as it is in the Navy. Other than aerial, MOST weapons released in the Army are by enlisted. The real issue is getting an enlisted person trained well enough to operate a large UAV in the same environment as the...

Scene in a fiction book, Admiral takes command

WOW. I didn't realize that my "hypothetical" was so outrageous. LOL At least one person figured out that I actually was there and it probably DID happen. Yes, an extorp can activate after early separation, and in this case, it DID acquire, home, turn away, reacquire, and home on...

Scene in a fiction book, Admiral takes command

OK....hypothetically...Lets say an admiral is onboard a cruiser during something like a fleet-ex. He is the COMCRUDESGRU. Lets say that ship was doing an ASWEX involving an ASROC shot. The ASROC booster motor malfunctions sending the ASROC tumbling through the air and landing close to the...

Army Aviator (Warrant Officer) to Marine Aviator?

Navy = Higher minimum level of expertise, more professionalism, more tradition, unchanging rules, more rules Army = Some very high expertise and flight experience (upper warrant community), very broad experience, frequent reinventing of the wheel, rules written and equipment fielded because of...

Army Aviator (Warrant Officer) to Marine Aviator?

OUCH! Definitely not the same going the other way (Navy to Army). No OCS or WOCS. No TBS or Basic. No flight school. It was still a bit of overkill when I had to attend the Blackhawk AQC with 1400 Seahawk hours under my belt. Six years in the National Guard and I am STILL trying to learn the...

Think this Sequester thing is real

No kidding! I sit here in Tucson at a TDY flying course for my second track (IP vs MTP/ME), checking my email for a furlough notice, wondering if the new furniture for my office will have arrived by the time I get back. I've seen our flying hour program get increased just prior to the...

    Maint...er...MD State Police jobs

Its a good chance those are federal technician jobs. The Army and Air Guard use technicians almost extensively for maintenance pilot positions. But since this thread is about Maryland State Police, disregard any further comments. I know nothing about them. Although I DID stay at a Holiday Inn...

    Titanium rods in my legs

I had two 2.5" titanium screws put into my ankle Jan 2012, removed late Mar 2012, and was fully up and flying by late June of 2012. I no longer run for the APFT and do an alternate event. I was already an aviator with a good record, so the process was a little more predictable. It can be done...

A Pat On The Back For All Helo Bubbas...

Wish I could say the same for the M model with anhedral blade tips. Everything gets blown back at the aircraft during landings. We cracked 7 windshields doing dust landings in Albuquerque and in Kuwait. Of course both areas were moon landings, with talcum powder dust littered with small rocks. I...

    Sequester

Yes, but the boat needs work, and a 20% cut puts boat upgrades on hold. Not to mention being in Arizona for Army training during the Mug Race this year. Depressing.

    Sequester

Not related to USNA, but here is how it is affecting the National Guard...so far: AT was moved from off site to now be on site. While much easier on the soldiers, it does not exercise the deployability of our units near as well as actually packing up and moving operations to another location...

Really??: Ten Thousand Feet and Ten Thousand Miles (A UAV Article)

Meanwhile, the infantry dude on the ground gets a pat on the back for killing an insurgent with his M-4. The guy escorting the convoy on the ground gets a handshake...maybe. Heck, the dude in the original article thinks the most danger he's in is while driving to work. Killing someone from...

Hmm, helos are more involved in combat?

We have a new HUD, about 1/4 the size with a thinner cable. I am sure we will never get a designator laser. Somethng about red crosses painted on our aircraft tells me a laser designator will never find ts way on our aircraft.

Hmm, helos are more involved in combat?

HH-60M has it. I would be happy to have that superimposed on the FLIR display. We have most of this, but prefer to not have ALL of that stuff on our PFD. It is available on the FMS, where I would prefer it. HIT checks are done on our IVHMS screen. Continuously computed HIT isn't necessary. We...

Hmm, helos are more involved in combat?

Back to the point of the article. I really don't think Navy helos were what he had in mind. Brownout landings are scary. While some are almost a non-event, the worse of them ranks clearly above night unaided small deck landings on my pucker meter. Medevac pickups along an MSR at night after...

Really??: Ten Thousand Feet and Ten Thousand Miles (A UAV Article)

He did not make HAC due to poor aeronatical judgement? After all, I've never heard of someone not making it because they were just a bad stick. How do you trust someone to operate a UAV and drop weapons on target that you would not trust to operate a helicopter with crew? It seems there is a...

My Latest Purchase (or just pictures of your current guns)

I bought an old Marlin bolt action .22 back in flight school (1985/86). Got an upgrade yesterday, a S&W M&P .22. Now if I can just find someone with magazines in stock for less than $50 each. Getting the host trgger mod for my Glock 23 in 2 weeks when they get more in stock.

    Service member being an idiot

The problem is, there isn't always that distinction. In our case and the one I linked to, our unit was training for a month and a half, with training that ranged from GMT to land nav, to medevac operations. Show time was sometimes early in the morning and sometimes not until after noon. The...

    Patriot Drills....no.

It sounds a lot like the National Guard. It is hard to get things done on one weekend a month and two weeks a year. We get additional flight training periods (AFTPs) to cover the flying, but the other stuff happens on drill weekends or out of your free time. We probably fly during half of our...

    Stupid question about Army Aviation

Active Duty and Guard Hueys are gone. Guard Lakotas are not deployable OCONUS. They lack ASE gear and are (in our state of Florida) funded by a different program prohibiting their use overseas (Mexico being an exception). There may be AD units doing MEDEVAC in Europe with the LUH, but I doubt...

    Navy Officer to Army Pilot

Are you the same guy who posted on Military.com? If not...I'll clarify a few things already mentioned. The Army won't automatically ask about a DOR, but you will end up going to a flight board. At the board it will be hard to disguise the prior Navy service on your resume without being...

A Pat On The Back For All Helo Bubbas...

Each crew got a case of beer of our choice for the one Navy rescue I was involved in. Didn't really want it, but thought it was a bit rude to refuse, especially since the CO of the F/A-18 squadron called and our CO insisted. "Just doing our job" was they way I felt. Same in Iraq for the...

    Your favorite duty station

I was never stationed there but did vist a few times in the military, both Navy and Army. My favorite military visit was with the National Guard in Hilo. I was out there for vacation, logged in on an AFTP, flew around the big island, then continued my vacation. If I were ever to consider an...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

This thread is all over the place! LOL To chime in on the single FRS idea: Army and Navy flight school aren't a whole lot different. To contrast Army and Navy flight school, get rid of primary fixed wing training all together in the Navy. Make a primary, intermediate and advanced helo...

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

LOL...the UH-60A/L/M has a 540 fpm limit. I really "surprised" a few IPs when I first landed the Blackhawk. That and the differences in tailwheel location (think fulcrum) makes landing the two aircraft a bit different. Do any Navy guys fly both the S and the B,F, H or R?
  48. RobLyman

Another helo vs the world thread (moved from helmets)

I find this whole dicussion humorous. Back in the late 80s during Ernest Will when a legitimate over water threat existed and was countered by "non-organic" helos, we were promised forward firing weapons and the SH-60R. How long did it take for the Romeo to hit the fleet? It's sad, but I can't...

Another nail in the coffin of Old-School Naval Avaition..

Aquaflage flight suits would be worse than our A2CUs..because you'll have that little emroidered sailboat on them! Bwaaaa haaa haaa (here comes the BAN hammer!) Actually, I would hate to see that happen. In one fell swoop, my Navy heritage would be neutered.
