Navy med 101 to first duty station

Yes, you will burn leave during that time until you check into your next command. So your leave will be between the date you formally check out of OTCN (They will stamp and sign your orders) and then when you check into your next command (They will stamp and sign your orders). Any travel time...

Navy med 101 to first duty station

Do you have a command sponsor yet? Definitely reach out to him/her to coordinate your travel and leave plans. Most overseas locations have indoc programs to help you get acclimated to the area and assist with the moving and househunting process. It's all a little different overseas than in the...

    So long HGU-55/P

I hate that shit. There are so many parallel programs across DoD trying to solve the same problems and wasting billions annually because we refuse to work together.

    So long HGU-55/P

Then just require that the helmet be painted white. I know how hard it is to find somebody in rough seas, especially when you're not right above them, but I can't believe that paint couldn't do just as good a job while being lighter.
  5. AllAmerican75

    So long HGU-55/P

I never understood that. You could build reflectors into the helmet that are better than that tape but we don't. It would be so easy to include that as a design requirement. ??‍♂️

    Airshow swag!?

Can you do unorthodox things like screw drivers or bottle openers or something? I've gotten a bunch of things like that from vendors and contractors and they're really useful. That might help sell the swag at a decent price for the squadron. Also helps sell it within the Wing. Never forget...

Starting my Navy Reserve application journey

Definitely need to make sure he meets the academic requirements for some of those. The masters requirement can be a real gotcha though I know some of the communities like EDO have waivers if you can earn your masters in a certain amount of time.

    Non-NEX Uniforms?

What's the best way to ensure I get a good fit with those? They seem expensive but I can't tell if they do made-to-measure uniforms or not.

    OCS College Question

Yes, there are equivalency and accreditation paperwork that can be completed to get you credit for your foreign degree. It will take some effort on your recruiter's part but it can be done. I know a few people who have foreign degrees and were able to commission just fine.

    Navy diver

Honestly, even for EDOs diving is a collateral duty. Most of our diving billets are at RMCs, shipyards, Fleet HQs, and Sub Tenders. It's largely a collateral duty on top of their normal duties managing maintenance, engineering, and cost/schedules/performance. The only jobs that are primarily...

    Navy diver

Civil Engineering Officers (Seabees) also attend the Joint Diving Officer program (Along with USCG and US Army Corps of Engineers) along with EDOs in order to be trained as hardhat divers covering surface-supplied diving, underwater construction, rebreather diving, and other related topics. None...

I will second this. They will know how to reach out to the OCM at PERS-41 in case your search doesn't pan out.

    Navy diver

To add to this, the only officer communities with billets at dive school are Explosive Ordnance Disposal, Civil Engineering Corps, and Engineering Duty Officers. You need to be a physical stud as you will be spending a lot of time running with the young bucks fresh out of boot camp or the...

Spec ops in the Navy vs other branches?

Any SpecWar or EOD job in the Navy is going to involve water and swimming. If you don't like swimming, you're not going to enjoy any of those jobs. Same for the Marines. Furthermore, if you are already trying to decide which Special Operations branch you want to join because you don't like to...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

Yeah, my guess is there are a whole lot of support and noncombat billets that they need to fill to keep the gravy train flowing to Kiev and produce all of the quadslides and storyboards for the NSC and CJCS meetings back in Washington.

    SSN Readiness

So does your IATSE chapter interact with the yardbirds a lot? Are you helping them unionize? Have you talked with them? Have you heard their concerns? Have you talked with the yard owners? Have you heard their concerns? What about the government yards? You been there and seen their manpower...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

I think Atlantic Resolve is the general ooeration to support Ukraine. I've been seeing hotfills come across the wire from the detailer asking if anyone wants to help out J4 with acquisitions and FMS stuff for Ukraine. Probably what these SELRES folks are being called up for.
  22. AllAmerican75

    SSN Readiness

Cool, I'm glad you know how skilled laborers in Hampton Roads think and can decide whether or not unionizing makes sense for them. I will take firsthand accounts and talking to all parties involved over your own pro-union propaganda. Unions don't always make sense and many workers don't see the...
  23. AllAmerican75

    SSN Readiness

VA is not a pro-union state. The private yards are all "at will" employers. In fact, many don't want unions because the rigid union structure would cut into their wages and reduce their bargaining power. That's not a function of number of ships or yards but rather the lack of welders available...

    SSN Readiness

Not surprising to me. We closed far too many public (Navy-owned) shipyards during the BRAC periods in the 90s and early 2000s. They are simply overwhelmed with CVN and SSN work with absolutely zero availability for conventional surface ships. Place the Jones Act restrictions on top of it and the...

Non DH SWO Signers? What do they do with you after your 2nd DIVO Tour??

When I got to 6th Fleet the Air Ops guys have me a callsign and I had no idea what do with it. A few months later, I had random dudes dropping by my desk to ask me questions and were addressing me by my callsign instead of name. It's a completely alien experience for us non-airdale types.

Non DH SWO Signers? What do they do with you after your 2nd DIVO Tour??

Interesting. Seems things have changed then. It used to be that to become a WTI you needed to sign the bonus. The SWO community still hasn't fixed its retention issues, it seems.

Non DH SWO Signers? What do they do with you after your 2nd DIVO Tour??

How years of commissioned service does she have? Again, the ideal flow point to DH school is about 7.5 years of commissioned service. Even if she is a WTI, it does not mean she won't go to DH school or receive orders. I'm not sure how she got WTI orders without signing the bonus considering a...

High School Straight to Academy or Civilian College First

I'm not sure I understand. Do you believe working towards a commission in NROTC or at the academy is incompatible with getting good grades in a useful degree? What is a "useful degree"? What do YOU want to study? What do YOU want to do with the degree? Getting a degree isn't enough these days...

Questions about being a Seal Officer

    1. As a SEAL Officer, you will lead your Sailors on missions, often in the same field conditions that they are in. Sometimes that's combat and sometimes that's a recon mission and sometimes it's some other mission type. It's not all running and gunning. You're putting the cart before the horse...

High School Straight to Academy or Civilian College First

Class load depends on your academic major. If you're planning on majoring in a STEM field then you will have a heavier class load than someone on the humanities. Also, if you are at the academy or ROTC, you will have to take Naval Science courses which will always add a class to your workload...

High School Straight to Academy or Civilian College First

The academy is a four year university and they will teach you Calculus and all of the courses you need. If you want the civilian college experience, then just apply for an NROTC scholarship at your school of choice. And yes, Midshipman are able to go to airborne school but there are very few...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

Thank you. I can flex to make a 6-12 month deployment/mobilization work but I can't keep doing the dance of trying to avoid orders OCONUS or back to sea every two years for the rest of my AD career. The flexibility within SELRES is what's most appealing. In my head, it's almost like having my...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

Thank you, I didn't think of this. I'm an O4 so not sure if I'm still "junior" or not. I'll keep it in mind. I've been at a warfare center the last two years working with mostly civilians. The experience sounds very similar. Lots of stuff gets lost and slips through the cracks because they have...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

Thank you. I'll get hot on talking to the detailer and CTO ASAP. FTS/TAR isn't an option for EDOs. We're too small of a community for it. I'm getting out because I can no longer balance the needs of my AD career with the needs of being a single father, so I've made the decision to put family...

    USN AD to SELRES Transition

Ladies and Gents, I'm resurrecting the thread looking for some gouge on the process for transitioning from AD to SELRES. I'm planning on making the move from active duty to SELRES for family reasons and am confused on the process. 1. Do I have to resign or can I just treat the move as a PCS...

    Should I take Calculus?

I know there is for NROTC but I can't remember if there is one for OCS. I never had to worry about it because I was a Mechanical Engineering major and needed calculus anyway.
  44. AllAmerican75

    Should I take Calculus?

Is there a calculus for non-STEM majors available? Double check that it will count for your calculus requirement with the Navy, but it may be an option. This is oftentimes called something like "Calculus for Economics" or "Business Calculus."

How to become a Flight Surgeon?

While I was going through OCS, there were a number of dudes who came through ODS as docs who had to have easily been in their late 40s or early 50s. They all had advanced specialties and commissioned as O5s and even an O6. The O6 was a cardio-neurosurgeon and decided one day that he wanted to...

    Navy JTACs/FSOs

These billets are few and far between. There are NGLO battalions that are open to aviators but I'm not sure how career-enhancing they are. Best advice is to focus on getting through OCS and flight school while staying healthy and not getting NPQed. When it comes time to select a shore tour or...
