    Religious Accommodation?

You would be able to affirm the oath of office and leave the "So help me God" portion out. http://militaryatheists.org/about/faqs/do-i-have-to-say-so-help-me-god-during-my-enlistment-oath/ Funny you should mention Southern Baptists because there aren't that many. Most of the Navy Chaplain...

Need SWO Input For Military Fiction Research

Sweet baby Jesus, what is PERS-41 smoking?!? The answer to the community's problems isn't to push people harder and burn them out faster. If only we had funded and fielded the 8 inch gun system back in the 1970s. :(

I don't know of any weapons systems on board most large warships that still allow for laser or visual target designation. OHP FFGs used to be able to do this with the single armed bandit launchers and a dude with binoculars on top of the bridge, but that is ancient technology. I think VBSS...

It really depends upon what is physically happening to take out comms. Is the entire sub-light RF spectrum schwacked? Then the radars and all of our IFF stuff won't work either. Something to actually take out the entire sub-light RF spectrum would be SciFi indeed. If it's just radio comms being...

Need SWO Input For Military Fiction Research

Essentially, at the end of your sea tours you would branch off into either Engineering or a Topsider specialty with engineers becoming experts in how to operate and maintain the engineering plant while the topsiders focus on driving and fighting the ship. The Merchant Marine and Coasties already...

Need SWO Input For Military Fiction Research

Like @Aluroon said, I'm not sure hours of watch stood directly translates to better proficiency. What we really need is to figure out how to better train our SWOs. You need to put each officer through multiple different scenarios over and over again with somebody who's extremely knowledgeable to...

Top notch post. How does the WTI pipeline screw with placement? Has PERS-41 mismanaged the WTI folks already? Your guess is correct. There was talk a number of years ago about creating some sort of log book like aviators or merchant mariners have but I think it died on the vine.

I wouldn't doubt it. The NC Natty Guard boys get a lot funding and are pretty well kitted out with a good mix of units. Hell the Air Guard bubbas just got bend new C-17s.

Just goes to show how long I've been away from the organization. I'm glad to see that nearly every plane has G1000s. The added capability makes the work much easier. Are any of the old turboprop Caravans still around? Those always seemed to get rave reviews for FEMA and other disaster relief work.

That's going to be the most boring segment of the book. "Hey OOD." "What's up Wheels?" (Slang term for quartermasters) "I just measured local apparent noon, I'll have a fix in the next couple of hours." "Very well, keep me posted."

Are you one of the Full Time Reservist CAP members or still a volunteer? I'm assuming you're working at the wing or region level. Those are the future leaders of the Air Force and America.

I hate that about the way we use chat as well. It used to really piss me off when standing battle watch and I just wanted a straight answer out of somebody and they couldn't just send a quick note saying "Hey dude, the daily OPREP is going to be a few minutes late. Sorry the inconvenience."...

Chat and e-mail have pretty much supplanted voice comms at the operational level and higher. This is much to the chagrin of many old salts and myself since nobody seems to know how to talk on the radio anymore. I also miss the crypto beep. Datalink/TADIL and GCCS are also used heavily. Another...

Would I make a good SWO??

I didn't find high school very challenging either, and spent most of my time worrying about football, but college was a wake up call. As HAL said, you need to focus on getting out of HS, getting into college, and getting graduated from college. As an engineer myself, I would advise against...

Would I make a good SWO??

Let me give you the advice I think you're really looking for here: Stop asking the question of what the Navy expects out of you and whether some strangers on the internet think you'll be a good fit and start figuring out what the best fit for YOU is and what YOU want to do with YOUR life. You...

    CWO, IPO, SUPPO???

Do you actually want to study any of those? Have you looked into what earning any of those degrees entails? Getting a degree isn't just about getting a check in the box for a commission but for earning professional qualifications so you can later work in those fields. Only you can know what...

Can you recieve other commissions than the ones listed online?

All officers are expected to get a Masters in order to be promotable past CDR. As a SWO, you'll be able to go to NPS for your shore tour and get a Masters there. The selling point for SWOs is military experience. If you spend some time on your own to meet the requirements for a tonnage license...

Can you recieve other commissions than the ones listed online?

That's going to be up to you and what you want to do with your life. If you want to be in more of a support role but have more specialization, then RL is probably...

Is it possible to become an SWO as a marketing major?

That is one of the most unique degrees I've heard of. He must be interesting. I've got a colleague who is an intel officer with an archaeology degree and is a trained archaeologist. The stories he tells are wild.
  29. AllAmerican75

    CWO, IPO, SUPPO???

Not necessarily true. You can participate in NROTC and not receive a commission. I know this from personal experience. You must secure a commissioning contract or scholarship to be commissioned upon graduation through NROTC. Lateral transfers can be very competitive and take years to get to the...
  30. AllAmerican75

Can you recieve other commissions than the ones listed online?

It is rare but it is possible. NROTC prioritizes Unrestricted Line accessions as does the Academy. The Academy has a few Restricted Line (CEC, CW/IW, IP, EDO, and Intel) spots open every year but they're hard to get. The only people I know who commissioned out of NROTC as CWs or IPs were because...

Is it possible to become an SWO as a marketing major?

Yes. If you're in it for the rank, you're going to have a bad time. If you don't know why you want to be a SWO, you're going to have a bad time. If you want to be a SWO for the money, then you're going to have a bad time. Aviation has its own hardships and sacrifices so the grass isn't always...

    Advice for prospective naval aviator-astronaut?

Good motivation, now go talk to a recruiter. Civilian flight experience does not necessarily predict success in flight school nor does the Navy necessarily care. The Navy will train you to fly the Navy way. Now start working out (I can't tell if you're a man or woman so I don't know if...

Navy Officials Reveal Details of New $100M Light Amphibious Warship Concept

This is the big lynch pin in any future conflict. We lack the number and capacity of shipyards needed to sustain a long term fight. OCS grad need to expedite waivers

We had four guys in my OCS class who spent a few weeks waiting around Newport for NAMI to give them the thumbs up. Sadly, two of those dudes got whammy'd and redesignated before moving on. It sucks, but you need to sit tight and wait. This is part of the process.

AnthroNerd & Jack of all Trades: How "Marketable" am I to OCS/SWO?

The military isn't like a traditional job hunt; marketability isn't really a thing. We'll train you for what we need ultimately. AnthroNerd & Jack of all Trades: How "Marketable" am I to OCS/SWO?

The better question is what do YOU want to do? Who cares what is "marketable" or "looks good" on a "resume." What will you be happy doing for four to six years? Once you figure that out, then go apply for it. You're welcome :)

Welcome to the Great Adventure. When you get to the Fleet, you're going to be confronted with an adventure like you've never experienced before. Best six generation jet fighter engine choice for UK

It's definitely going to be directed energy weapons. We're going to need to have a full compliment of phasers and proton torpedoes if we're going to effectively compete with near peer threats like the Klingons and Romulans. Heck, both of them have cloaking technology, so we will likely need to...

    Waiver for bachelors degree requirement?

FYI, there aren't many easy avenues to become a Navy pilot through the Reserves. Outside of special cases, you need to have been active duty and trained/winged thusly before transitioning into the Reserves. Also, I'm not sure how many flying jobs are available as a Reservist. Most of my aviator...
