Why it's good to be in Naval Aviation

The Andromeda galaxy is about four or five Moons in width across the night sky, but it is too faint to be seen in full. Here is how it would look if brighter: There are also the small and large Magellanic clouds, which are two dwarf galaxies that orbit the Milky Way. And the Milky Way itself...

Well one would think it would be common sense to know to not fly one's drone in such a situation given there could be everything from police helicopters, news helicopters, medevac helicopters, firefighting aircraft, etc...flying around.

Someone was flying a drone over the LA fires and it hit a Canadian Super Scooper plane n loan, so now the plane is grounded for at least three days.

    Netflix recommendations?

A fun movie that really embraces the spirit of the golden age of aviation is The Rocketeer from 1991. It is one of my all-time favorite childhood movies (though it is not a children's movie per se). Also the special effects I think are very good, probably better than what you'd get today without...

Drones. Why are these things so difficult to fly? WTFO?

There was a story recently about Google's robo taxis and problems women were having where groups of men in cars would see them and start following the taxi, and the women were helpless to stop the taxi from leading the followers right to their place of residence. Also men would see the women in...

Drones. Why are these things so difficult to fly? WTFO?

The concept looks cool, but there are plenty of examples of these small companies with such a product where they present to the public that it is perfectly safe, then they accidentally kill people and you find all manner of safety standards were violated. The most recent example was the Titan...

An interesting tidbit on the Shuttle is experts knew NASA was greatly overestimating the Shuttle's proposed capabilities, that it would never be able to maintain the launch cadence they were claiming it would have. The Soviets were deeply concerned about the Shuttle and came to the same...

    How to get jets…

Interestingly, when 1996's Independence Day came out, the script originally called for Will Smith's character Captain Stephen Hiller to be an Air Force pilot. However the Air Force apparently didn't want anything to do with the film as it had Area 51 in it and the military didn't yet officially...

North Korea strikes me as a very rational actor. They like to give the impression of being irrational in order to scare everybody, but that is a highly intelligent family and regime. You don't hold power for three generations by being irrational, IMO. Also, they backed down from Trump's threats...

    UFOs?

A problem is you guys are also looking at this from the perspective of being highly experienced professionals with multiple decades of experience. The average person doesn't know anything about military aviation and thus has no way to gauge whether these guys are really experts or not.

    Random Griz Aviation Musings

That is actually a good point. You often hear about the idea of a country having a large pool of young men familiar with military skills to draw upon if needed (like guns) but having a large pool of civilian pilots is also a good idea.

That used to be an argument back in the '90s as well, that the future would consist of lighter, more mobile armored vehicles. Then we invade Iraq again and it is found that the only vehicle with enough armor to fight through various areas are the tanks. And the other vehicles all had to have...

How can anyone really know this though? Until all these whiz-bang new missiles are really tested (i.e. a hot war or conflict) I don't think anyone can say for sure that carriers are obsolete. The Chinese certainly seem to value carriers, and also remember that carriers aren't just about...

You guys are weird. Can't it be said that BOTH the Navy and the Army are kinda like two legs on the same soldier when it comes to winning wars? Yes, wars are often decided on land, but the land force (army) is often supplied by sea (navy). And both said land and sea forces also depend on air...

Keep in mind though that Altman is not an AI expert. Now if he himself had developed it, that would be different, but I do...

    USS Edsall Found!

I've read that the Japanese ships had to rely on flags and firing flares to be able to target ships whereas American ships had mechanical computers that allowed them to hit back with much better accuracy. So even if the Edsall lacked such, the Japanese probably weren't too much more advanced.

C'mon, 2099? No one can predict that far out. That would be like predicting 1999 in 1924. China might be a liberal democracy, Japan might be a dictatorship, and the United States may no longer exist, having fractured for whatever reason.

The Wehrmacht by the time of D-Day had been heavily ground down and even then, a massive deception operation had to be conducted by the Allies in order to deceive the Germans on just where the landings would occur. Excuses, excuses. Old guys are the ideal: I am over 60 and the Armed Forces thinks I’m too old to track down terrorists. In today’s military thinking, you can’t be older than 42 to join the military. They’ve got the whole thing backwards. Instead of sending 18-year olds off to fight, they...
