if you lose one engine does the other engine instantly provide the extra power needed to keep the prop on speed or do you need to add the power your self?

Several of you are missing the point. It wasn't the choice of language that the pilot was using (not entirely anyhow), it was his obviously emotional state. As a passenger you have a vested interest in your pilots emotional health and have every right to ask a question if it regards safety...

I talked to a VR guy who told me that airlines cannot actually look at your log book, they can only take what you tell them as your total times, basically at your word (which shouldn't be an issue for naval officers, but we all know it can be). Is the existance of this law true?

man, those planes suck the gas! and i thought we put a dent in the dead dinosaur supply. We fuel plan, very roughly and conservatively at 5K/hr. Wonder how much an F-14 blew through in zone 5. I'm not going to feel so bad about all the gas i burn on our flights. not that i really felt...

wow, that's not very much. that's what our APU burns... It always amazes me that the minimum gas we can be on top with is nearly 1000 gallons!

it does amaze me how much fuel I use on most flights. When i convert the pounds to gallons it really hits home. The P-3 is like a 1978 Chevy Suburban, with the three speed tranny and rear axel geared for towing, so i guess poor mileage should be expected.
