    Vance for Primary??

True, but in my limited experience with the T-45, AoA approaches feel nothing like they did in a T-34, so I think its a wash. The challenge flying the jet is in managing the mushy controls and engine spool-up time that comes with flying a jet at high AoA. In the T-34 the power response was near...

    Cross-Country Nametags

In API there was an AF Capt Buttie, pronounced "Booty". We couldnt wait until she made Major...

    Vance for Primary??

FWIW, there have been a few guys who go through Vance, and then have trouble adapting to the Navy's way of teaching things in Advanced. Vance guys seem to have a tougher time in the BI & RI sims down here in Kingsville than do guys who did Primary at Corpus or Whiting. Plus Ive heard AF guys...

Pentagon Adviser: Dump Big War Training, Learn New Languages Instead

I see your point but I dont buy it. Anyone capable enough to challenge us will have to be part of the global economy - which by definition means they will be closely connected to the world largest economy, ours. Thomas Friedman argues this point really well in "The World is Flat". I think we...

Pentagon Adviser: Dump Big War Training, Learn New Languages Instead

But how many 'peer' competitors do we realistically expect conflict from? Most countries that could be considered peers are either allies, or have economies so connected and interdependent with our own that they have more to lose in an all-out war than we do. Shouldnt we consider the...

    Navy vs Air Force

Also, I dont know if youve considered the Academies at all, but Navy has the advantage if youre sure you want to fly. Reason being that USNA puts out nearly as meany pilots as USAFA does (not sure of the exact numbers), but competition for those slots is tougher in CO Springs. Lots of people at...

    Selection out of Primary/Advanced

Agreed - I can only speak out of my own personal experince. To porw0004 as a word of encouragement : A number of my friends and I all started API within a few months of one another. We all busted our butts during primary, we all selected during completely different conditions. Some during P-3...

    Selection out of Primary/Advanced

I second the above. And NSS actually is pretty transparent if you take the time to really look into how its computed (most of its explained in the MPTS). Granted, with flight grades there will always be some subjectivity on the part of the instructor. Show up prepared, act like you care, nail...

SCOTUS affirms gun rights in historic decision

Their take is that the ruling was "narrowly tailored to guns in the home and not on the street, emphasizing that the city can still bar handguns from being carried outside of the home." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/26/AR2008062601779.html

Stupid questions about Naval Aviation (Pt 2)

The T-45's canopy is made out of an acrylic, so when the MDC goes off it doesnt so much shatter as it melts. Little melted bits of canopy tend to stick to the pilot/ejection seat when it goes through the blown canopy and then harden - or at least thats what we were told in systems class.

SCOTUS affirms gun rights in historic decision

I think the issue is more whether or not the 2nd amendment protects the gun ownership rights of individuals, or whether it was relates purely to the formation of the "militia" - which something of an outdated idea

SCOTUS affirms gun rights in historic decision

Some good news: http://dcist.com/2008/06/25/supreme_court.php If Scalia is writing the opinion its likely in favor of the pro-gun crowd, as he is known for a literal strict-contructionist interpretation of the Constitution.
