    other services.

No It is looked on as honorable service and if you have done well there it will help you, if you are a dirt bag there it will hurt you. Interservice rivalry is pretty much all in fun at msot levels.

    Some questions about flight life

Every deployment is different and depends on many factors too numerous to list. Is the head guy a libo hound or not, is he a go getter looking to get into a fight or does he wait to be tasked by higher. Just some of the factors that go into it.

Saltier Marines - what's your best advice for a brand new 2ndLt?

Quick pieces of advice: TBS-dress warm, dont sweat it too much. Enjoy DC Flight School-study more than you think is necessary, try to learn a little about each community as you approach selection. dont wish it away, enjoy your time where your only job is to learn to fly. the fleet is...

    Female Jet Pilot

I dont know if there are any female aviators on the forum. As with any selection it all comes down to many factors almost none of which you ahve any control over. If you are number one in your primary class you are ALMOST guaranteed jets-that is waht you ahve some control over i.e. do well...

OP-ED Why I gave up journalism to join the Marines

Yeah same experience for me. Keep in mind the Grunts get a chance to bea no sh!t leader as a 2ndlt while we work upstairs and pay a bit of lip service to leadership. The first time an aviator gets a chance to really command is LtCol.

    How low can you go?

Flight schedule notes read either 10' or 50' depending on the crews and range etc. We usually set our own hard decks between 50 and 100. The ground has a P sub k of 1.

    The million dollar question

Man portable recievers for the image downlaod arent really that practical, they are heavy and battery life is an issue. I ahd one to play with in 2003 and it worked great but had some pretty severe limitations weight and realiability being the biggest ones. Much better on an LAV than on foot...

No more Solo X-C for IFS students?

yeah the most dangerous aviator is the 1000-1200 hour guy. I had my mishap at just shy of 1200.

    Cool t-45 Goshawk Videos!

Ummm no. The OH-58 has a beefier engine and a four bladed vice two bladed system. It is based on the jet ranger but a bigger jet ranger, not sure of the civilian designation and dont really care that much. The mighty TH-57 has enough trouble flying off with two studs, an IP and their gear for...

    The million dollar question

I know that was your point, but it doesnt matter if that is all they train to if they still arent the ones you would call first, why not get more bang for the buck and call the multi-role A/C. Even we dont train exclusively for CAS but I would challenge you to find any community more focused...

    The million dollar question

9 times out of 10 the Hornet, if it is a Marine Hornet 10 times out of 10. A-10s are cool but I have seen some screwed up stuff done by their pilots, friendly fire incidents aside even.

Payne was good to do. He actually cared about teaching you. It was painful at times but worth it.

    T-34 (and others) goof-ups

Its not much better in the fleet. Dark @ss night 007 OVC 5BR, just back from an initial LLL shoot with a mild case of the leans and a 1stLt too dumb to be scared in the back seat so you're flying it from the front (no VSI by the way in front) and you hear: "Camp Pendleton student final...

yeah no kidding Im sure there are any number of IA billets the attrites could take to steal a phrase from another thread "free a man to fight". I have seen a couple of attrites from 303 sent to Iraq as convoy commanders and camp commandants. We are too short in all services to say thanks for...

Heads up on temp lodging! (Marines)

Well, a painful lesson but most admin lessons are painful. File this away for both your won future use and when you send Jr Marines off on TAD or they are PCSing for the first time tell them the story. Eating that sucks as an O-1 but is crippling to an E-4.

Military Trial Question (any JAGs onboard?)

I have been on two courts martial. One was a LCpl one PFC. For the LCpls he had requested an all Officer jury (sounds like foolishness until you see SNCOs in a "jury" room). The second we had two Captains, one Lt, a Gunny and two SSgts. So yeah it is fairly common.

  34. skidkid

Look what a CH-47 can do

All a crutch, we have none of that, its all done by the pilot, our SCAS helps but it doesnt hold shit. WE shoot PARs from the front with no VSI-you get used to it. Good stuff

Rifle qual - how'd you shoot?

Stupid new range order, dumbass non hacker range FAPs. I shot marksman this year after four years straight as expert and now since I am on the major's board I might not ever get back to the rifle range-oh wait disregard my rant I hate the range.

    F/A-18 for crowd control?

yeah like I said above, but we dont try to employ the jet blast as a weapon
  37. skidkid

    F/A-18 for crowd control?

nope, I think he is full of sh!t. I have seen 53s used to "blow" the crowd away wiht rotor wash but it makes them vulnerable if the conflict escallates. Hornets were used to do low passes for intimidation but it wasnt slow and it wasnt to employ the jet blast it was to say next time they will...

Ginkoa Biloba or Ginseng to improve Color Vision and Depth Perception?

Asian alies say US can't defeat China

Ok boys there was a great article in The Economist that made an interesting point that China really isnt that big a threat right now. Their threat status is inflated by the "Military Industrila Complex" you know the guys who want to sell stealth bombers rather than have another Army division...

Scooters Forever (A-4 Skyhawk Tribute Thread)

    Cold Weather Flight Operations

no but something to add, take extra time on your engine starts, let it warm up as the engine oil will be cold and thick and can rupture the seals, let it warm up before you advance the engines.
