Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

Agree. Why is it that everything I buy is wrapped in 3 layers of plastic, then packed with plastic air bladders in a cardboard box, then wrapped in plastic tape, which is then wrapped with a dozen other boxes in shit tons of plastic wrap? Also- stop making single use utensils that will...

Sen. Schumer gas for electric car trade in program?

I tend to agree. Those 15 cent walmart bags have more plastic than the free ones. Plus, it's not the consumers who are the problem- it's the producers of the material who are creating the problem.

Disagree. NORTHCOM is most important (as well as the historical units). Everything else is secondary. If your home is in shambles it doesn't matter what your neighbor is doing, much less the guy on the other side of town.

So what's the answer to both issues? the EPA in the 1970s was pretty successful. I grew up next to Onondaga Lake, and Allied chemical completely fucked the entire ecosystem of that place up. Should we go back to that? I don't care that Allied employed 1000 workers and brought money into the...

I smell what you're stepping in. Perception is reality. So PR and psyops campaigns mean something. America has convinced the world that these little island nations in the SCS are in danger of massive floods and sea level rising crises that threaten their continued existence. China has...

    NJP TO OFFICER

I think you're a troll. Here's another cookie. And I suppose I was wrong as you were an intel guy. That explains a lot. Why are you on an aviator's forum? Where are these folks who seem to share your cokehead lawyer experience?

    NJP TO OFFICER

I don't get it. In one part of this thread you lambaste how the Navy/Marine Corps doesn't accept people who have poor paper trails, or who don't give people second (or third) chances after they screw up. You speak of how much better the civilian world does it. Then you say that 50% of the...

No. Being nice has nothing to do with it. But the Marine Corps looks at them the same way (NJP and failed career milestones). (My career is a case in point)

    NJP TO OFFICER

That's not true. A doctor can be fired after a Morbidity and Mortality hearing. NJP is just like that. What about a teacher, a cop, a firefighter? You are missing the point that we're expected to be better than Joe civilian- we're held to a higher standard. NJP is the LOWEST level of...

    NJP TO OFFICER

In my civilian job if I got a DUI I would lose my security clearance, which I would be fire for. Lawyers are disbarred, Doctors lose their license to practice, Pilots lose their certificates. They all get fired for it. I suppose a bagger at Walmart might not get fired for being a meth head...

    NJP TO OFFICER

Yeah. The exception that proves the rule. Why is there so much support for folks who fucked up career-wise? It's not like this dude couldn't land a jet on a boat at night and had to find a new career. He broke the law. Is someone who broke the law worth it, compared to others who didn't...

What was/is your light at the end of the tunnel?

Here's the thing about military flight training- you're never comfortable when you're up for a solo, or doing something new. If you were, then you've been overtrained for the task. Eventually some things become more comfortable, and even fun. Others will continue to be stressful and difficult-...

    R-2908 by Pensacola - what's it for?

I suppose it's easier to keep a piece of land that it is to gets new one. They're good places for gliders to land if you run out of lift and get stuck away from the home field. ?

Officer Recruiter Problems and the Pilot Board

On paper they look like a world class athlete who doesn't have the capability to achieve academically. This has been told to me throughout my entire career- You're only as good as your paper trail says you are. All boards are paper boards. Everyone knows folks who have gotten a P or two...

It's too bad you didn't do that as a Midshipman. But "I proved I can ride a bike fast" =/= "I proved academically that I can study well enough to understand how aircraft systems work, or how to employ a complex weapons system in a dynamic environment". The old guys around here who used to...

Officer Recruiter Problems and the Pilot Board

I think that's more of a timing issue than anything else (slots available vs who they were up against when the board met). The selection criteria is the same: be eligible to be an officer in said service, take a test (ASTB or AFOQT), be medically qualified, fill out application. From there...

Officer Recruiter Problems and the Pilot Board

It's bad gouge to think that you'd be competitive for a USMC slot if you're not competitive for a Navy slot. Flight school isn't a tiered system where one service is better than the others and therefore tougher to get in. If you're competitive for one, you're competitive for the others.

Officer Recruiter Problems and the Pilot Board

The answer to your first question no one will be able to answer for you, as you're years away from that, and so much can change that any number given to you won't be relevant. Every service has mins that you have to fly to maintain currency. Part timers in the ANG still have to meet those mins...

Officer Recruiter Problems and the Pilot Board

All of those concerns (like timeline and being backed up) are trivial when you're a Guardsman. Start pledging units. Keep doing the CFI thing. Retiring/separating reserve officers who transitioned to GS

A quick Google search says the Navy does not. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Reserve_Technician_Program Air Reserve Technicians carry a dual status, working as both full-time Department of the Air Force civil service (DAFC) employees and as uniformed Reserve Component USAF military...

    Pilot shortage?

I'm saying that no one has figured out how to shortcut the Attitude portion of the training. Cutting skill and knowledge training where it makes sense is an obvious choice. Fewer sims? Fewer lectures? I'm all about it. Less flight time in the airplane? I don't know how else to train an attitude.
  37. Swanee

    Pilot shortage?

The interesting thing is that the individual services, and the DoD as a whole, has spent a lot of money on studying adult learning theory. Initially courses are designed with all of this in mind. Every course is built upon the Knowledge, Skills, and Attitudes required of someone who is a...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

No heat. most folks wear layers and try to minimize the amount of time they're sweating their ass off on the ground. Battery powered heated undergarments are nice. I've had the socks for a few years (it seems that your feet get cold first) and my wife bought me some base layers from...

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

It's an apples to oranges comparison. And I still answered your question. The front office scheduled the day so their asses were covered if something bad happened, while your ass was hung out to dry- you either didn't plan, didn't prep, or you broke crew rest.
  42. Swanee

How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

It's even simple stuff like switching from the day page to the night page. The transition is scheduled, and it is longer than, "Well, we gave you the weekend." In the VTs and the FRS, crew rest was nothing more than time you weren't on the flight schedule. But that's not crew rest in the USAF...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

I suppose it depends on how you define "portable". If by portable you mean that I can take the O2 bottles out of my Ventus and Pilatus to refill them then yeah they're portable. But they're a full up aviation LOX system, and both of my airplanes have a dedicated space for them in their design...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

Well. My opinion of the FAA remains unchanged- they're a spineless organization that does absolutely nothing to promote sport aviation in this country. They hide behind fear, and cover themselves in legal jargon so they can say, "it's not OUR fault" to congress. The FAA is their own worst enemy...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

99.99999% of the gliders out there are VFR only- airspeed, altitude, variometer is about all you get. Some get radios, and transponders, and flight computers, but now you're talking cockpit instrumentation that's worth more than the glider. FWIW the eastern block countries trained IFR in...

Mythbusters to take on: PLANE ON A TREADMILL!!

Interesting. How does one get a sailplane IFR rated? Instrumentation alone is going to be difficult. especially when a lot of FSDOs won't let you make changes to the airplane's electrical system (unless you're flying experimental...)
