The SHOW: Airlines still a "good gig"??

Then why ask pilots to take unpaid leave? Couldn't the active flights just be redistributed amongst those crews? How big a percentage of planned flights are contingent upon newly-delivered aircraft?

Sorry, I'm an idiot when it comes to airline management- it's always baffled me how mercurial it is, especially when there is clearly a lot of demand. Help me make sense out of that.

Sky isn't falling. Like Zippy said, there are "reasons". Also, other airlines have been experimenting with reduced manning over the last couple months, in the form of voluntary leaves of absence. At my shop, it was due to reduced growth based on losing the MAX deliveries, combined with a little reduced demand in typically dry months (Jan-Apr). We aren't doing any paid LOA's in May, so I was a little surprised to see this with UAL, but their hiring has also been, IMO, unsustainable. In the sense that I envision no UAL where there are 30,000 pilots required on the seniority list in any year that isn't 2022. I wouldn't be super surprised if they realized they blew their load early, albeit a bit exacerbated by the slowdown of airframe deliveries.

To directly answer your question, realize that if there are too many pilots, you have too many mouths to feed, line holder or reserve alike. So there are basically two options. First being this, the offer of unpaid or paid (as was the case at my airline) 30 day leaves. Second being (as you suggest) reduced average line value. In that case, everyone takes a pay cut for that month, at least on paper at bid award time. Dangling a carrot for a few that might want/need a month off without sacrificing benefits is probably a smarter way of doing business than pissing everyone off and reducing ALV to 50 to 60 hours or something. We aren't salaried employees, so the credit hours matter. That is a really simplistic explanation, but perhaps addresses your question

I've read some airlines are pushing to move to single pilots in the cabin, particularly in Europe ironically. I don't know anything about piloting airliners, but that seems rather frightening, I mean what if the pilot had a heart attack or something? Are my concerns justified or would that be an okay idea?

BWAAA! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
(BTW, it's a cockpit... or "flight deck". The cabin is where the pax sit. But if I'm the "single pilot in the cabin", I'm probably on a deadhead, and you can spot me with a whiskey on my tray table. In that case, I think "single pilot" is viable.)

Because we have too many pilots for the next bid period. Simple as that. Will this continue? Many say it will.

My hope is that very few take the zero lines or LOA/COLA's. It might drive the company to offer paid leaves in June and beyond, much like they did during the Wu-Flu.

COLA's have happened regularly during my 7+ years here. Now, if another Black Swan event happens, all bets are off.

I was at the Training Center today: 39 new pilots started yesterday. No new training classes in May and June, but we will not stop interviews.

What’s the deal with the requests [by adults] for these aircraft/airline cards? Is it some sort of fad? The requests for these cards are through the roof at my airline. Do you clowns at other airlines provide these aircraft/airline cards?

Delta CEO personally could contracted for Naval Aviator celebrity Scott Kelley to host the Eclipse event flights.

A very tasteful touch. A reason why he is one of the most admired CEOs in the world and why Delta is a well run company.

The G-1 is a nice touch. I believe Captain Kelley is wearing a Speedy.

What does @mad dog think?

At Eskimo, we got a message not too long ago letting us know they were on order. Didn’t think much of it until I was hanging out at the gate in EWR waiting for our plane to arrive, when a 20-something appearing guy approached me and asked if i had the cool trading cards. Fortunately i had read the memo, and could inform him that they would soon arrive :) People are funny. But if stuff like this makes people excited to buy tickets and pay my paycheck, I’m all for it
