You forgot swim qual and Rifle range.

And gas chamber. And PME (Sgts course, Staff Academy, EWS, etc). And required annual lecture training (security, information assurance, sexual harassment, etc).

Huh, I'm guessing it's not LtCol(Ret) Shusko that designed it, then.

I don't know who actually desgined it. I think it was a group of folks. The Colonel that came to demonstrate it was involved and is the HMFIC of implementing it and supervising the program.

I missed the actual lecture part because I was at the monthly wife beater meeting. I watched the demo.

I wonder if the colonel who designed it was a Crossfit fan? With the exception of parts of the movement under fire, it seems a lot like your typical Crossfit workout.

Agree - and I love CrossFit. But like everyone has said finding the time is going to be ... well ... interesting.

I was a amused by a Marine's comment in the MC Times that the "support establishment" Marines would be the ones beating the grunts on the CFT, ostensibly because they have more time to train.

By support, does he mean Supply or Admin types. Yes, sure in that case.
But there is support and there is SUPPORT. :D

It will be done IN ADDITION to the PFT. The PFT will still be scored, but the CFT will just be pass/ fail.

Here is my concern with the CFT... When I was with my artillery and infantry battalions, getting all of the Marines out for the PFT was not that big of a deal. We had more than enough time in our training schedules to knock everyone out in one day. In the wing, this is not the case. Scheduling the entire squadron means a loss of over 500 hours of man-hours working on the aircraft--and the PFT only takes a couple of hours!! With the CFT (which by the way can't be administered on the same day as the PFT), we are talking AT LEAST an all day event to properly organize and supervise the event. I am a big fan of the body composition program, and yes, there are certainly a few more "soft bodies" in the wing than in the ground combat element. Unfortunately, there are certain tradeoffs that must be taken into consideration if we want all of our jets/ helos flying as much as possible.

When the Commandant came to talk to my TBS class, he mentioned that it would most likely be in rotation with the PFT (ie PFT in January and CFT in July...or something to that effect). I can't remember if he said that was right off the bat or once the CFT becomes a scored event.

FWIW, supporting establishment usually means "not anywhere in the MEF." So it's the disbursing clerks, brig rats, and legal clerks who don't ever deploy that I think they're talking about.

Is there anybody here who thinks the CFT is a good idea? It was built because the PFT isn't an accurate measure of how fit Marines are to perform in any theater. MOST Marines and therefore units in the FMF (an aside, are we trying to get away from that term?)truly will benefit from the training required to perform well on the CFT.

I can definitely see both arguments. It starts to become a slippery slope when there's a standard that one group(ground MOSs) is to adhere to, but another group(wing MOSs) is not. It's like saying that aircraft maintainers don't need the rifle range or that aviators don't need to attend a full TBS. Perhaps the argument can be made, but at what point is one Marine not cut from the same mold as another? One may argue that our entry level training is the only wicket to get through, but I submit that if institutional standards in each community diverge at all, then you're not talking about two different communities, but two different institutions, and this is tacitly against the Marine ethos.

It's so tough...Which vat of Kool-Aid to drink out of is such a big decision.

1.Timed fire hose carry from the bow to the aft. (
2.Timed fire hose carry from engine room to the bridge.
3.Perform 1 & 2 exercises in fire suit and oxygen tank.
4.Repeat 1 & 2 in MOPP suit while conducting fireman's carry.
Why don't you just say "timed run" from bow to aft, and so forth? I carry my fire hose everywhere, no choice because I can't help what god gave me :D.

I dunno, I think I'd rather run it the same day than do both events on separate days.

So, they absolutely can not be done on the same day or is it at the discretion of each unit? I know that when we run it next week we are also going to the range to qualify again. I'm thinking they are gonna have us run it the same day to give us extra time on the range.

So instead of it being the 6 mile-a-year club, it's the 3.5 mile club ... sweet....
