If anyone is getting to the airport at a similar time on the 8th, maybe we could share a cab. I don't have a ticket yet, but when I do, I will post the time.

I haven't received my orders yet, has everybody already got em?

I have already been changed twice (was originally July 16, and then sept 25) and I am really hoping I don't get moved again. Sitting on your ass for 4 months can get old.

I plan on getting to Newport on Oct 7 and staying with a friend until I report on the 9th.

How is everyones physical fitness and how much gouge do you have memorized?

Same thing happened to me. Original date was August 7th, then October 23rd, then October 9th, and I haven't got my official orders yet. I was told I'll get them a week or two before the 9th. I already have the Big 3 pretty much memorized and I plan on going over that as much as possible until then so that I can just belt out that stuff without even thinking. I'm also going to memorize the ranks and related insignias of the Navy and Marines as well as the hymns for both. I was also told it's a good idea to memorize chow hall procedures before I get there.

As I recall, the airport is really far from the base - I suggest making friends and hitching a ride from someone here.

As for gouge, I don't recommend memorizing chow hall procedures. All of the class teams can and will put their own little bits in/out and you don't want to be the one that sticks out for doing it by the book and not what they want.

I just made reservations here. Call them and they will ask for your name and last 4 of your SSN. I noticed that this place books up fast so give em a call.

Yeah I reserved a room there for the 8th. There is apparently a shuttle that runs from the airport to this hotel for $25. Their number is 18008461502 if anyone's interested.

Candidates,
I am the current Candidate Officer in charge of student pool at OTCN. Student pool consists of ensigns/candio's waiting on medical clearance and/or orders (which includes myself and a handful of other pilots), but mostly DOR/NPQs.

I am speaking directly to the candidates that are in the BDCP program. There have been several candidates over the last few classes who have DOR'd and have been woefully unaware of their obligations. To put it simply, the Navy will expect you to live up to the provisions of your BDCP contract. There is no paying back the money or going home or anything like that. Unfortunately, I have been the first person to fully explain that reality to some of these individuals.

Candidates, please pass this along to everyone in Class 05-12. Good luck in your training!

Alive and kicking...sort of.
Alex, thanks for the very applicable reminder. I've been living with this as a constant reminder weekly, if not daily, due to my achilles injury and my slow progress back to good condition. I've had enlisted personnel and officers at my NRD flat out tell me that if I don't meet the minimum requirements to be an officer (in my case, the lack of running for over a year had resulted in me gaining weight and being out of standards) that I likely would meet the enlisted standards and will fulfill my obligation as a non-designated stryker for two years, etc. Many people do not consider the implications of the contract that they agreed to, and think that because a direct ascension officer candidate can DOR and go home that they can - that's not the case.

My two cents: if you're in a situation where you're considering DOR, think about the reasons why you enlisted in the first place and how those reasons are much greater than the reasons for wanting to quit. OCS is a very brief phase of our military lives, and though it may seem tough and nearly impossible to complete thousands of others have made it through to the end, and you can too. OCS is mainly an orchestrated mind-game with education and physical components, so let the political stuff and the headgames blow by, don't take anything personal, and get on with your career like you originally planned. After your commitment is up, you can do with your life as you please (the Navy owns you until then) but you'll thank yourself in the end that you stuck it out and made it through. Having to drop out and serve under some of the very same people you worked with side by side at OCS is bad enough, but even worse you definitely do not want to be dishonorably discharged.

Life is short, military careers are even shorter; take what is given to you and make the absolute best out of it and I guarantee you'll come through everything all right.
