How much weight do I need to lose?

Sure, but ultimately, you can't beat science in terms of calories in/calories out. All else being equal: if you have a calorie deficit, you will lose weight. If you have a surplus of calories, you will gain weight. Our bodies convert the energy into motion and heat which is expelled as CO2...

How much weight do I need to lose?

Umm... No it's not. See Newton's Law's here... energy is neither created nor destroyed but it is converted (from fat/protein/carbohydrates) to motion/heat/thinking/other caloric burning). To your Coke/Diet coke thing, I don't think there's a single nutritionist in the US who would recommend...

    Hot new helicopter/rotorcraft news

If I recall correctly it was against the SOP to let the student do it, and it was a waste because they took so long to get buckled in you’d lose any NR you had going. So, you’d get them buckled in, spin it as fast as you can (maybe like 7%) and hop in and start it super quickly. I didn’t do it...

Spinning the rotors on the -57 to get just that little extra oomph before a battery start wasn't uncommon during my instructing days haha!

Precisely what I was recommending and agreed over and over and over again.

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

I am not a detailer, but it's been made no secret that the Navy is struggling to fill at-sea billets and that includes within the Naval Aviation ones outside of squadrons in particular. PERS is doing everything they can to get third-tour pilots ("disassociated tour") and...

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Do you mind if I ask where you are in your career? Post-DH, non-command O-5? Or what are you?

  10. DanMa1156

    Disassociated Sea Tour Likelihood

Do you mean this as you'd hit the MSR while on the Disassociated Tour (like almost everyone?) and then the Navy would force you to do the 12 months (minimum) on your ship? This happens all the time, or I'm not understanding what you're writing here. In short, as @Brett327 said, to answer your...

No I get that, and I am certain if this policy is enacted it will result in any non command O-5 staying past 20-21 years, but for those that would be interested in staying for (unlimited) shore duties, this pushes them out too.
  13. DanMa1156

    Flight School backed up

On the one hand - that’s a relief - I had been told 36 months Vice 24… With that said, I’ve heard through the rumor mill that there is serious consideration to make the terminal O-5s who have completed their sea duty do a sea-shore rotation even past 20 - anyone heard anything? (Previously I...

Traditionally, it's 500 hours with no sim time for Helos either. And CVW helos aren't really struggling for hours - if anything - they are short on pilots IMO. HSC Exped can struggle depending on timeline and dets. Can't speak to the HSM side. The 450 is likely a reflection of both lower...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Huh never saw the ground video. Saw one from the air on SIPR pretty quickly after it came out unless I am misremembering things.
  17. DanMa1156

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Yes, and I know the crew and many members of the det that were there on alert. I will attest they are excellent pilots and leaders (the ones I've met). Permissive or not, a neat tidbit in HSC history at a time when people were questioning the value of helos off the carrier that proved worthy.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Umm… you joke… but I’ve been in a VTC during COVID times where a 4 Star was lambasting 3 stars over not controlling COVID hard enough while also demanding to know why retention was low. At one point the 4 star threatened to order squadrons to make bunks in the hangar bays and not allow their...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Everyone talked about HSC CVW as just being PG. I can count on my fingers the number of times I was actually just Plane Guard and not conducting operational Log, ISR, SSC, or even just ACTC training for a younger guy.

    What are you reading?

I don't think I've ever read a book faster in my life. That book was incredible. I was not more than vaguely familiar with the story, hadn't seen the movie (still haven't), and just couldn't put it down. I read that in a few days on a deployment.
  23. DanMa1156

    Flight School backed up

Maybe it’s an interim change? I just left my DH tour and thought that the rule changed to 450 in the Dec/Jan timeframe.

CNAF 3710 has already reduced how many flight hours are required to make HAC, presumably for this program, if not for just lower flight hours JOs are getting these days across the board.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I genuinely went to Norfolk with a good attitude and loved my squadron (thank God, the only thing I liked about the area really). I also couldn’t wait to leave Norfolk. I was so over it and never want to go back, particularly with school age children.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I’ll leave it this: it’s not supposed to be that way and I haven’t personally seen that as an RV at AWF or other exercises. Of course, terrain and the enemy get a vote, but it’s not (supposed to be) set up that way.

The Great, Constantly Changing Picture Gallery, Troisième partie: la vengeance!

Believe it or not, I did it several times to our cruiser on my last deployment. I think I had only done it one other time ever.

If you’re saying though they cut out a lot of the Academics - I’d be really curious how those students do in Advanced and the FRS. Primary taught me so many fundamentals and more importantly- how to study the academics.

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

This sounds shockingly similar to the level of detail Navy Airwings put into CSAR/PR planning. Yes, we do fly other missions. Yes, they compete for times, but believe it or not, the skill sets are similar, the planning process is similar, and the stick and rudder work isn’t all that different...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

I wouldn’t necessarily confuse organizational confusion on what mission sets we should be employed in with doctrine in how we actually do them.
  31. DanMa1156

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

Agreed. Nonetheless, I think, unfortunately, a lot of SNAs are being exposed to pretty bitter IPs these days. I don’t blame the IPs for their bitterness particularly with PERS shenanigans going on, but I do blame them for their unprofessionalism in front of students (certainly not all are...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

How you responded is how I treated my flight school selection. But as an instructor from 2016-19 in CNATRA, I would say the vast majority of students were doing what they could to set themselves up for the airlines. I understood CNATRA’s frustration with IPs bitching about the Navy and...

    Navy Dedicated SAR Squadrons

As others have said, my friends who went USCG have had mixed things to say about their transition - grass wasn’t greener, just a different shade of green. They briefly suspended the rank/pay reduction a few years back, but last I saw and all my friends’ experiences have been they took one. It’s...

You joke, but my Uncle was an Infantryman in Korea, At one point in his time in Korea he was assigned to those helicopters with the stretcher on the side as like a 1 man infantry guard and medical attendant I guess is what he did? Maybe someone here knows better.

    Naval Aviations "One" Problem...

During my HT tour, we had an officer jump on a grenade for an IA to a UN Peacekeeping Mission in Africa (blue helmet and everything, she had to go through Army courses for shooting, driving, etc.), but the deal she made with the detailer was "this time doesn't count against my shore tour," and...

That has changed dramatically in the past 10 years or so and, while not designed to "weed" people out (although they do), they are fairly rigorous courses designed to ensure the instructors are prepared. When I went through (2016) it very much felt like going through Advanced again with a...
