A Word on OCS (as of 2 DEC 16)

Yes, they give you plenty of opportunities to unDOR if you change your mind. They put you through multiple interviews with everyone up the chain to make sure it's actually what you want to do. I think a lot of the interviews are cya for the Navy. Through just about every interview they will even...

    Depth perception mega thread

They don't use the same test at OCS as they do at MEPS anymore. They now use a book with the glasses, similar to the ones you would use at a civilian eye doctor.

    NPQ'd at OCS

MEPS isn't nearly as thorough as the medical you will get at OCS, not to mention anything that may happen between MEPS and OCS. MEPS can miss a lot. The Navy will also not address any preexisting conditions short of an emergency. One example is someone had gallstones at OCS and the Navy would...

    NPQ'd at OCS

It depends on what you were NPQed for. Some conditions will only disqualify you for specific designators, while others will disqualify you from the Navy completely. If you're not disqualified from the Navy completely, you will be redesignated. (this is from my experience in the last year)

Best navy platform for commercial pilot pathway?

Take your GI bill and put it towards full time civilian pilot training. You can be to an airline in two years. If your goal is to be a commercial pilot, that's the quickest way.

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Worst case if you were NPQ from NFO you can apply for Intel during OCS. I knew someone at OCS who did just that and was accepted.
  7. D

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

I never really heard any horror stories about being an NFO at OCS, there were a lot of people there who wanted to be NFOs. I heard more stories about the attrition rate that goes along with being designated at a pilot. One thing I will say, OCS will test how committed you are to the Navy. If...

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

That must be relatively new then. Everyone I saw who got NPQed for eyes was forced to redesignate to NFO. If they were NPQ for NFO they had to put in for another community. There was no choice to be sent home, it was either take this opportunity to be an officer or DOR.
  9. D

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

OP was only found NPQ for his designator, not the Navy. He will not be sent home for an astigmatism, he would get redesignated. I'm focusing on the OP's situation, not others.
  10. D

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

He's too far out of the standard to consider other options. I know of people who were disqualified from Pilot, forced to go NFO, and then redesignated as a pilot in Pensacola. Those people though were just barely disqualified and passed with a better night's sleep and better conditions.
  11. D

    At OCS, got NPQ'd

They won't NPQ you and send you home. They will simply redesignate you, most likely to NFO. The only way he will ever get back to Pilot is to DOR, get PRK, and reapply.

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

When I went, I only had to carry around my suitcase for about an hour, then they have you dump everything out on a table and start sorting through it, and you put what you can take with you in a seabag that they put in your room. A word of advice, make sure there's nothing loose that's going to...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

The most you should need upfront, is money for a cab/uber and a hotel room. On Sunday, they will give you gift cards for $3500 worth of uniform expenses, that have to be paid back at the end of OCS. Around week 4, a pretty good chunk of change will be deposited into your bank account, this...

    sTUPID qUESTIONS aBOUT ocs

Don't bother, if you fail it they will give you additional training on Week 9, and you get to skip morning PT. Essentially they'll give you free lessons if you need it. It's really not hard, you don't need to be a professional swimmer by any means. You jump off a 10 foot tower, swim to the...

    Navy Surface Warfare Officer?

These are the numbers being given by staff at OCS. I get it, but you're on a message board talking to people who have never been in the Navy, they are simply trying to join. If someone wants to be a SWO, why not give them the pros and cons and let them make that decision for themselves? It...

    Navy Surface Warfare Officer?

I've seen the threads where the Navy is accepting 60-90% of applicants. Isn't it usually more competitive?

    Navy Surface Warfare Officer?

I don't understand why so many communities bash each other. I'm sure it's just good fun in the Navy, but from the outside looking in, it honestly kills the Navy's ability to attract talented individuals do to jobs that need to be done. I see people bashing on SWOs and NFOs all day long in here...

    Recruiter: PRK Waiver not Needed

Also before you actually do enlist and swear in, you'll fill out a Change of Status and Annual Certificate Medical form, basically it asks if you've had any surgery or anything has changed since your MEPs examination. This is where you can tell them you've had LASIK since and cover your bases...

    Recruiter: PRK Waiver not Needed

According to the updated waiver guide, corneal refractive surgery is no longer disqualifying if it falls within the pre op refractive limits. This was updated in May 2017 so I believe some recruiters may be a little behind the game on this...

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

I'd imagine this mentality is why you didn't get selected. "I'd rather fly a Cessna 150 than serve my country in any other capacity". Just remember, you're an officer first and aviator second. There's a chance that after 3 years you won't be flying anymore regardless. If you're only there to...

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

Question, did anyone who got Pro Rec Y SNFO from last week, get Pro Rec Y SNA this week? *EDIT* Just got the news, Pro Rec Y SNA!
  26. D

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

It's not a millenial problem. It's the general stigma perpetuated by society and pilots in the Navy that NFOs are the bottom of the barrel taking what they can get. So many Navy Pilots make fun of NFOs. I've seen so many civilians who make fun of NFOs too and always throw it out that they...

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

Is this why I was on the NFO only list as a Pilot/NFO applicant?
  30. D

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

I'm confused by this too, I applied for both and my ASPR clearly says so. My recruiter said I did apply for both and we're still waiting for the results for SNA.

    12 APR 17 SNA/SNFO Board

Pro Rec Y NFO. I applied for both Pilot and NFO. Recruiter said he's still waiting on the Pilot results.

    OCS 15 MAY 17 SNA/SNFO Board

I believe this board is in April, unless they moved it back after the January board was delayed?
  34. D

    The Officer Recruiter is in...

Yes, SNA or SNFO. There's a January board, but the applications were due December 16th, which is why I'm doubtful my package will make the January board. Otherwise I'll be going for the March one too.

    The Officer Recruiter is in...

Agreed. I've had similar experiences too with MEPS requesting additional paperwork with had having LASIK. I've had to go back to my optometrist a few times to get additional tests. Then it takes up to a week to get approval, then 3 days advanced to try and schedule and hope they don't find...

    The Officer Recruiter is in...

I'm going through the same situation. My MEPs has been cancelled 5 times, one of the times I showed up to the hotel the night before to find out. The day before I went to take my ASTB, the administer had a heart attack and I had to wait 2 months to get rescheduled. I was scheduled for MEPs on...

Was flying for the Navy/Marines worth it?

It's great to hear that the passion doesn't die. I guess it depends on the individual and their passion for aviation regardless of flying in the military. I've met quite a few people that flew in the military and have no interest in flying as a career, or even at all now that they're out. I...

Was flying for the Navy/Marines worth it?

My question is, did flying in Naval Aviation kill your love for aviation as a whole? It seems like a lot of pilots get flat burned out on flying, and have no desire to do it anymore once they get out.

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

The one I used, was actually this model. I believe the top knob on the throttle was the fuel, and the knob where your left thumb goes would be the power. The clutch button was in the center of the power knob where your thumb rested.
  40. D

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

The knobs are actually up on the left throttle lever and turn from left to right. Left is down, right is up. The knobs correspond to gauges on the bottom right hand side of the computer screen. You determine neutral by looking at those gauges and move the knob accordingly.
  41. D

Why did you become an NFO?

What's wrong with teaching primary students? Seems like a good gig. I'm just curious, in your squadron are you ever looked down upon for being an NFO? I've talked to pilots going through API who pretty much laughed at the NFOs.

    ASTB-E/APEX 4 Experience -DEC 2013

I finally took my ASTB and received 57 8/8/8. I will just say this, I bought every ASTB, Military Flight Aptitude, and Officer Candidate book in existence and none of them came close to replicating the real test. Every word in this thread is vital to doing well on your exam, a lot of the...

    ASTB Cancelled - CAC Card

I had my ASTB scheduled for Friday, and it was cancelled because a CAC Card wasn't activated. The guy who was needed to activate it, won't be available until Tuesday. Is there anyone that can explain what this means and why it happened?

    LASIK or PRK

I found an updated version of the waver guide from April 2015. I'll post some specific points of interest. I am going to call the optometrist at NAMI tomorrow, but it's looking like I'm just going to go Wavefront LASIK, since it seems to be the preferred choice...

    LASIK or PRK

I saw that this question has been somewhat asked in another thread, but it was older and I wanted to see if there had been any updates on the issue. I am currently 20/30 in the left eye, and 20/40 in the right. While I would be accepted as a SNA, I have read countless stories about people being...
