How to take the next 6 years off, a.k.a, my transfer to the Air Force

Along with airlines, I think a lot of guys in the AF didn’t realize how good they had it compared to other services, so they’re very spoiled. Any Gold Winger going to the AF will just laugh at the stuff that pisses off your typical AF pilot. Very different perspectives.

    USN 1300 GENAV Jobs

This is the correct answer. Command won’t really care what you do as long as you put in some time as a helping out. For example, If you want Intel, ask to work there and get the head Intel guy to give you a recommendation. All the 1300’s I knew were working on re-designating or prepping for...

    USN 1300 GENAV Jobs

It’s a bad deal for some, but just have to run with it. Happened to me as an ENS after the NAMI whammy; I turned down the chance to be an NFO and wasn’t picked up for Intel. Detailer sent me to a carrier as a CATCC watch officer and went through a two-week course for it in Pensacola. When I...

Rand study on USAF pilot retention

They upped the fighter bonus to $35k per year, and have some crazy idea of replacing hours in trainers with virtual reality training, but that's about it. The AF has stated that their policy is not to keep pilots, but to try and train enough to replace everyone who is leaving. They don't have...

    U-2 Pilot Goes to Space

Being on the staff of the O-6 in charge of the flying squadrons, I can tell you that the U-2 will be around well into the next decade. Tons of money being put into the program right now and for the foreseeable FY's. The AF is desperate to bring in new folks, so hopefully they don't mess with...

    U-2 Pilot Goes to Space

Most Gold Wingers I've seen at Beale since maybe 2013 or so, when they did away with the IST for a few years. Now that I'm on terminal leave, the senior Navy guy resides at one of our FOL's. Keep applying; the IST's I've seen come through lately for interviews have been solid dudes, we need...

Navy Pilot vs. Career in Business

I stand corrected. Off to your cubicle, young man!

Navy Pilot vs. Career in Business

How many movies have been made about being in business (which don’t involve a bank robbery or something to that effect)?

    Flight Pay Changes

Correct, at least on the AF side. I think ours went up to $1000 in October if you had over 14 yrs flying. I didn’t see anything on this site about an increase, so it looks as if the AF did that on its own. I too always thought that ACIP was standard throughout the DoD.

    Teslas in U-2 land?

Not permanently, but we have rented some to use as mobiles at temporary detachments. I don't know if it's in writing, but the chase car obviously needs good acceleration. So, muscle cars are not used simply because they look cool. One of our permanent dets uses BMWs with right-side steering...

    NASA B-57 eclipse chase

At least a couple former U-2 guys flying there. Two seats so they do hire WSO types I believe. If you're truly interested PM me and I can get you in touch with them.

    Interservice Transfer for U-2

That article is a couple of years old. U-2 is getting money pumped into it again, with no end in sight. We're busier now than ever before. The most pessimistic prediction is now around 2025 to even start a phase-out, which would take years in itself. Oh, and that's yours truly narrating the...

    U-2 Crash

Shooter was a great guy and and an even better family man. He has 6 children and recently became a grandfather. He was also a fellow Gold Winger. He flew P-3's in Jax, taught at VT-6 in the mid-2000's and finished up his Navy time flying C-9's out of Oceana as an FTS reservist. He transferred...

    Interservice Transfer for U-2

Actually, we are again. Airline hiring has dwindled our numbers enough that IST's are opening up again. I believe we have a Marine and a Navy guy already scheduled to come out for formal interviews in the near future. I'll send you a PM with the contact info for the guy in charge of recruiting.

Possible 44% reduction in student SNAs ans SNFOs?

I'm a former P-3/T-34 IP who tranferred over to U-2's in 2010. PM me for the skinny if interested. The grass isn't always greener, but the flying is pretty cool. No brown boots with the space suit, but we still get to rock the Wings of Gold on our AF name tags.

Recommend a good car shipping company, continental U.S.

PCSing in the next few months and would like to ship one car from Texas to California. Can anyone recommend a good company that they have used in the past? I'm looking for reliability and price. Thanks in advance.
