Right up until COVID, airlines were not uncommon destinations.
Relatively new to the winged world here, I'm guessing those folks had extensive hours built up at the local flying club during their shore tours?

Some did that. Others went to an Aviation college with a 2 year program got a bullshit associates degree and flight training covered by the GI bill, joined a cadet program that promised a Job on the backside then CFI’d until they hit restricted ATP minimums.

At least until COVID came along (and maybe after; COVID isn't going to last forever), the people who did that are magnificent examples of taking advantage of opportunity, what the "invisible hand" of the marketplace was doing, the benefits of military service, and most of all good timing.

For a while it was really fun to see the guys and girls who put all those things together to get into what can be a really fun job. NFOs weren't the only former mil people on that track, lots of non fliers were working their way up by doing the same thing.

Absolutely correct. I know a bunch a of Prior enlisted who’ve done it, as well as some officers from non flying communities. Those who finished up this past year and got on with a regional aren’t in a good spot (except for maybe Skywest and Endeavor being less dicey), but the ones starting on the path or looking to get out and start soonish should be fine. If the projections hold up, they’ll spend the two worst years (I hope) of the recovery in school getting their ratings and the 2 year degree and then spend next 12-18 months after building hours and hit the regionals as new hires right as the majors start picking up.
