Apollo 13 comes to mind of a scenario where quick astrophysics math was needed to get them home while they still had oxygen, and there was no book or reg to follow.

Thread jack, but the BBC's Thirteen Minutes to the Moon Season 2 Podcast covers this brilliantly. It was as much the guys on the ground as it was Fred Haise, Jack Swigert and Jim Lovell who did some pretty incredible work to get them home.

There's more to a space mission than just the "astronaut-pilot" in the capsule. The guys in space are in almost constant comms with mission control. But the individual flight controllers at each console are only the tip of the iceberg, they have comms with a back shop to provide real time analysis. But that's not to say that the astronauts don't need a firm technical understanding because some things require more immediate decisions.

Anywhere you're putting military aviators, be it in space or on a big gray boat, you're actually talking about playing the world's greatest team sport. The QB (or the person with gold wings) may get all the headlines, but if the O-line can't block or the defense can't get a stop, metaphorically speaking, you're still screwed.
