Anyone have any gouge on how to go from USMC AD to flying in the ANG? I’ve seen some gouge and personal accounts of going to the USAF reserves, but nothing about the Guard. Seen some USMC to ANG gouge but it’s way old.

Would appreciate it, especially any recent experiences!

It’s the same process to go to ANG as it is to the reserves. The only added layer is that your package has to go through the state level ANG command as well as the AF reserve side so it just adds time to get the whole deal completed.

Otherwise the process is the same; rush a unit, get accepted, work paperwork.

Sweet, thanks!

Reach out to the unit(s) you're interested in then go hang out on their drill weekends when you can. Bring a small decent bottle of booze, have fun, and be a good dude and you'll probably be successful when they have a rated board.

I visited a couple units and received a job offer from one before finding out I was NPQ. Shoot me a PM if you have any other questions.

Echo above. Visit, hang out, figure out if you like the guys. Plenty of gold wing types from all communities living the good life in the Guard.

I know I'm in an RPA unit but I can forward you some emails that help translate some of the medical stuff and have some pretty good "Navy/Marine Document XYZ" is what they're asking for with "AF document Q". Same for the Aeronautical Review Board stuff. (I'm going through it now).

+1 to what everyone else said. A Guard/Reserve unit's primary concern about hiring pilots (rated or off the street) is whether or not they can stand to hang out with you for the next 10+ years. Somehow I slipped through the cracks. I think they were drunk. That's why you also bring a bottle of booze with you!

By the way...wouldn't it be great if we had a forum dedicated to AF Guard/Reserve so we could consolidate all this type of info?? ???

We used to, but it disappeared after one of the forum software upgrades. I had webmaster create a transition forum about 14 years ago, but no one really used it. Apparently I was ahead of my time. Or I was just a quitter.

@Gatordev & @webmaster

Would it be possible to make this a thing? I was kind of on the fence, but I just received some PDFs from my new wing about a 40k bonus for AF Reservist pilots. I don't really have a place to put them and I'd like to pay it forward as far as AF transitions go. I think there's enough gold-to-silver transition types to warrant giving us a small home here, even if it's not the busiest sub-forum. I'll even volunteer to moderate it so we keep the AF airplane porn pics to a minimum. Plus I can't really be bothered with baseops.

Thanks for the consideration.

I don't have the juice to make such a thing, but it sounds like a good idea. It's up to @webmaster to make it if he has the time. And since Disney is closed now, what else is he going to do?

Excellent idea. I’ll set it up later today.

Not to worry... I'll check in periodically and provide more than you'll care to see.
Hey now, if Call to Glory hadn't got canceled after only one season then I might have grown up and tried to join the Air Force instead of the Navy.

But once I heard that one line from The Right Stuff (the one about "aviators") then I was done.

:D
