What NRC considers competitive

I did not mention in my statement about my 8 year old DUI, only submitted my waiver detailing it, owning it and telling how I would never do it again and what I’ve learned from it. Was a pre-Rec N “DNR”. This time, I’m touching on it in my statement, my Lt Col wrote about how overcoming adversity has developed me into a better leader because of it, so we’ll see how the SWO board feels about it here in the next few days. Any adversity down to a Pg 11 up to a NJP is briefed all the way to E9 in the Marine Corps, it hasn’t stopped me from getting E7 within 11 years but has prevented me from my first and only chance at flight. All of my fitreps are phenomenal, combat deployement under my belt, never any other adversity besides a single DUI that was in a break in service after I separated after Afghanistan and was still allowed to come back on active duty and continue promoting. There’s my whole story, not that it matters, take it with a grain of salt, these boards are literally however that officer is feeling that day. Guys got picked up with duis on the board prior to mine that I missed due to processing error, then I receive DNR on the next board. Your guess is as good as mine. But I’d say touch on it in your statement if you have a waiver for it

Thanks for the info Gunny, good luck on your board.

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to the site and am looking to see what my chances are for the board as a Pilot/NFO/Intel. I’ll post everything down here, let me know how I’m looking when you get a chance.

Background: I worked as a video coordinator for a football team. I led student workers in providing film for our coaching staff. I interned for two years pulling 100 hour work weeks, and worked my way to a full time position, if that helps.
Age: 27
Degrees: B.A. History (2.67 GPA) M.A. Sports Coaching (3.77 GPA)
OAR: 54
AQR/PFAR/FOFAR: 6/6/6
Choices: Pilot/NFO/Intel
LOR: 1 co-worker, 1 manager, 2 former coaches
Leadership: Had a leadership position as a coordinator for a Division I Football program for two years. NRHA member for 1 year at my college.

I was told by my recruiter that my Masters GPA supersedes my Bachelors GPA for the Intel slot.

Let me know how I’m lookin’. Thanks in advance.
Intel will be a long shot for you. Your Master's GPA is on the average side. If I were you I would try SNA/NFO/SWO. Good luck!

For starters I wouldn’t tell someone not to apply for something. The better advise would be apply for those three and if not selected for flight for score purposes, retake ASTB, and INTEL for GPA THEN consider SWO instead. Coming straight out and saying not to apply for a designator right off the bat is a bit ignorant. Every question not asked is an automatic no. But should be fine for a SNA/NFO board with those scores, M.S. and no waivers.

Wait... what did you say? @AULANI 's advice is spot on.

If the person has not submitted a package before why would you steer them from Intel to SWO? Just for selection purposes? I would enlighten them on their competitiveness and say “hey if you don’t get selected then maybe think about SWO or another designator”

It comes down to the applicant and setting them up for success. Do they want to be an Intel Officer or do they want to be a Naval Officer? For the poster, while he has a masters degree, his UG GPA is fairly low and he's competing against those with much better academic resumes. Does he want to wait applying for one board, get non-selected and then wait more time to apply for another board (for another designator)?

While the applicant has every right to submit for what he/she wants, there is a certain responsibility for the recruiter to provide insight and suggestions. If the applicant has a 3.0 UG GPA, it would be "highly recommended" they consider programs like SWO and Aviation if their overall goal is to serve as an officer. If not and they only want to be an Intel Officer, that's fine but at least they do know that their odds are going to be doubtful.

I'm taking this to mean that Master's Degrees only get you in the door GPA wise, but your UG will still count against you at the end of the day?

That’s pretty much true. There are nuances, like a 3.0 in Mechanical Engineering wouldn’t necessarily be looked at as worse than a 3.2 History degree. That’s all well and good and makes sense.

The thing that bothers me is it seems the GPA (and possibly certain degrees when comparing GPAs) is the end all be all. Things like the age when you earned those degrees or whether you went to an established brick and mortar university vs some random military online university don’t seem to matter, when they should.

I went to a state university straight out of high school at 17 years old and earned a BS with a low UG GPA. I was immature and undisciplined. Fast forward 15 years and I’ve earned 3 more degrees with the GPAs of 3.5, 4.0, and 3.73. Take a guess which one I earned online during my enlistment (hint: it’s the 4.0). No offense to anybody because I “attended” one of these online universities for one of my degrees, but if everybody was going to these online universities, I’d venture to say the GPAs across the board would be MUCH higher.

I’m hoping when looking at the packages, the officers will see growth and maturity through the improved GPAs of secondary or tertiary degrees.

But that’s just my two cents...

You have to look at from the perspective of the people reviewing your package. They don't have the time to say "wow this person <insert various reason why undergrad/masters GPA is so low> really had it rough, let's make his grades count more than person X..."

Is it fair? Maybe not but they have to use some standard. They can't take into account every applicants life factors or sob story.

I figure it's pretty much impossible to say anything without test scores but how would a 3.3 in computer science B.A. from a top 30 (not an Ivy, but pretty recognizable as a good school) look?

worth a shot to apply, as an FYI I have seen people with an online BA and GPA 3.5 get picked up SWO over a prestigious school candidate with a 3.1 ish GPA, and a few other ones similar, so it is more about GPA than school.

Figured as much, just was hoping that the technical degree and recognizable school would at least counter my lackluster GPA a bit more. Some solid ASTB studying seems to be in order. Thank you for the advice.
