What NRC considers competitive

Hey all, hoping for at least some insight here. This is my second time submitting for Supply within a year. I retook my OAR yesterday and improved a bit.

Age: 23
Degree: B.A. Mathematics
GPA: 3.5
OAR (1st attempt): 48
OAR (2nd attempt): 54
LOR: 3. 1 professor, 1 work supervisor, 1 life-long godparent. I knew using a godparent might hurt me, but my options are limited for references, especially someone who could speak for my work ethic and personality over the span of 20 years.
Clean medical record and no issues with the law.
Background: Have been at a major retailer for 5 years, 3 of which have been in various management positions.

For this board, my recruiter suggested I dual process as enlisted and officer. He said that in his experience, candidates going through their second attempt for a board have a higher chance of being selected if the board sees they're committed to both sides of joining the Navy. Interesting that he presented that option to me because if I'm unable commission then I plan on enlisting. Does anyone have an experience about dual processing?

I personally feel a lot more confident going into the March board considering my OAR score improvement, revised motivational statement and the addition of at least one more reference. I have done a lot of research on Supply and from what I've read a competitive OAR score is 50s-60s, so I'm basically right in the middle of that.

Does anyone think this enough of an improvement to have hope at being picked up this time?

Your recruiter is just trying to get you in so he gets credit, dual processing unless you are fine NOT being an officer is a BAD idea.

Data over many years shows that the best chance to get picked up is your first attempt, the chances go down from there, while there are exceptions most don't fall in that category. I do think with a degree in math with a 3.5 you could be the exception though.

You are also applying to a designator with a very low acceptance rate, why not try SWO, Aviation, or nuke?

Hey everyone. I'm planning to apply to the April board for SNA/SNFO. Recently I've been thinking that I would be pretty disappointed if I got rejected for SNA and selected for SNFO, which has made me reconsider applying for both in April. I would be happy to be an NFO if I'm medically disqualified for NA, but if I can be a pilot I want to be a pilot.

The PFAR is bugging me since it's the minimum. I know selection rates have been high recently, but should I be concerned about the 6? I feel confident about everything else.

It should, it shows you aren't happy with just doing the minimum, that is a good quality to have.

I still want to join if I’m not selected my second round, even if that means I have to enlist. At this point, I’ve made up my mind about where my life is headed and the Navy is not where I want to be, it’s where I have to be.​

I went NUPOC in 2018, and I struggled bad with the interviews even being a math major. I switched to Supply after.
SWO, to be honest, doesn’t interest me a whole lot. I like the concept of having to be a jack of all trades, but the thought of driving a ship gives me goosebumps.​

they pick the best at the board, those that apply again have to compete against another group of new applicants, a person that re-applies is hoping that new group is going to be less competitive than the last group was, and sometimes that does happen, especially if a person has an application that in line with those selected on the previous board. I would say from my experience for every excellent candidate I had selected, another excellent candidate showed up on my desk for the next board.

@Austin-Powers If you want to commission, you need to keep reapplying. Just because you're turned down once doesn't mean you can't keep trying to reach your goal. You just need to strengthen your package and make yourself more competitive. Just because they took a bunch of great people at the board you were not selected for doesn't mean there won't be more people with similar stats at the following board. This is a very competitive process and they are only selecting the most qualified.

Not really, if you improve such as getting a better ASTB or Masters that will help.

Actually they have started a new thing Pro-N DNR, which means a person cannot reapply. Some that rec'd that were ones that had waivers, others who knows.

Just like with any civilian job the specific community can screen/control candidates the ways and means they want to.

Not everyone is a good fit to be an officer, regardless of how qualified they might be on paper.

I am submitting for the March Supply board, just wanted to see what you all thought my chances were. A little nervous about my low undergraduate GPA, hopefully I made up for that with my master’s.
Age: 28
No prior military.
OAR: 54
Undergraduate: Finance
Undergraduate GPA: 3.12
Master’s: MBA
Master GPA: 3.88
LORs: 3 from different supervisors, and 1 from a co-worker who is a retired Army Colonel.

6 years of management experience. I feel like my motivational statement was really strong, I had many people read over it including a current major.
