Hi all,
Just commissioned with class 04-20 here on 20DEC. Happy to answer any questions you may have! Req’d your FB group so can answer there or shoot me a message.

  1. Socks have to be plain white (apart from dark dress ones), right? I can’t seem to find any at a local Walmart or Target.
  2. How and when are candidate collateral duties (e.g. Section Leader, Education Officer, Admin Officer, etc.) assigned?
  3. What’s the typical number of hours for which every candidate gets to sleep?
  4. When are we issued each essential uniform (Khakis with Windbreakers, Dress Blues, Dress Whites, Summer Whites, corresponding covers)?
  5. Do people in the upper portion of the school’s Chain of Command delve into a candidate’s personal zone during face-to-face interviews?
  6. Will there be a lecture session on how to (properly) act as a Candi-O? What are some of the things discussed?

1. Check out amazon. That’s where I got mine from.

2. Depends on the class team, but typically they’re voted on by the class. A lot of people think that just because you’re in the top four you get immunity from events, but you most certainly do not; every single one of the top four in my class got fired, their replacements got fired, and 3 of them rolled. Lots of demerits to everyone.

3. You are provided 7 hours of quiet time every night. How you choose to spend those hours is up to you. There are a couple evolutions where you might get less than that, but nothing too crazy.

4. You will buy all the uniforms you need over the course of a couple trips to the NEX. They’ll cost probably around $3300, but you’ll probably spend a couple extra on random uniform needs as well.

5. not sure what you mean by delve into candidates personal zone during face to face interviews. You’re not having a one on one conversation with the CO unless you’ve really jacked up, if that’s what you’re wondering.

6. You’ll have a very good idea of how to act as a Candio when you get there. Don’t be a jackwagon, be professional, take responsibility, and you’ll be fine. There will be specifics to your billet that will be explained by the outgoing billet holder when you take over the squadron.

Thanks. For the 5th question, I just wondered about that possible scenario because we’ll never know - Some candidates might have come from backgrounds that involve broken homes and relatives that have had a disorderly brush with the law. Kinda like that scene in An Officer And A Gentleman where Gunny Foley remarks to Zach Mayo that “he’d done some checking.”

Are you provided a stipend like they said in previous post for the uniform cost?

I wouldn’t think so. Rather, uniform expenses would be deducted from our bimonthly paychecks.

Here’s an interesting suggestion - You can apply for a Navy Federal Cash Rewards Card (the “Noob’s Credit Card”) and a checking account to start transitioning to upon arrival.

Then, use the card to pay for the uniforms interim and eventually compensate the actual balances bit by bit ($300 for 11 months) later on through a fraction of your base pay, of course.

Watup, Fam?

Checked my mail today.

Sadly, no FINSEL letter from my processor at NRD San Dog as of yet.

I might just get lucky sometime next week.

  1. When are we to expect our first check? The following 1st or 15th after arrival?
  2. How do picking orders work? Do they pick 4 options to give you and you choose out of those ? How long before you find out?
  3. How long after graduation do you leave OCS? The next day?
  4. How long do they give you to gather your things from home before you report? I am going SWO and I think I go strait to my first duty station.

Processor emailed yesterday. He asked me, my recruiter, and another NRD DivO to coordinate the most appropriate date for me to swear back into service. I requested two Mondays from now (13-JAN-20) as my family had wanted to attend the ceremony on a Monday. We’ll see if that works.

PMd my processor minutes ago. The acting recruiter has my FINSEL letter and all other documents.

My recruiter’s not around as she’s due to have her child soon (Congrats to her btw).

So our recruiter receives our letter first and then they mail it to us?
