Gun Laws in your state

Has anyone been through the process of PCSing to CA with "assault weapons" in the last year or so? I've been looking through the military "assault weapon" registration and boy is it unconstitutionally difficult. Any lessons learned or personal experiences are much appreciated. Not heading out there until probably summer of '21, but wouldn't mind getting ahead on the paperwork to get at least one of my scary rifles out there with me.

This was brought up in another thread I believe as I don't see it here, maybe search "assault weapons", I do believe several said the best thing is to contact a California attorney familiar with gun laws in CA, they are just AFU.

When I lived in CA, I just took my prohibited rifles, disassembled them and left them in the closet. This was before the military exemption was a thing. Unless you really want to shoot them, CA is going to make it painful for you to do so legally.

It's really not that hard. You can make them featureless, which costs about $30 if you buy a Hammerhead grip. Probably less is you use one of those weirdo kydex grip wraps. Pinning the stock can be done in 5 minutes with a piece of metal and a drill. Then you can run the rifle and drop mags, but the grip will be a little weird. This is of course assuming your lower isn't one of the named lowers, which is possible, but more rare today than before.

@OscarMyers the military exemption went away for practical uses back in 2011-ish (right before I moved there). If there's some new exemption, great, but I would doubt it. That said, calguns.net will be your resource. Lots of threads over there asking the same thing.

Thanks! Took me a bit to navigate the "is your AR legal flow chart" and the featureless mods seem pretty easy. I'll probably do a couple like that and try out the Quick takedown pin mag swap one one of them. Doesn't look like my AK underfolder will be an easy fix without some serious mods of the takedown mechanism.

Yeah, when they updated the law that had made bullet buttons a viable alternative, I think AKs became a bigger issue if the stock folded. I left before the BB went away, but even when it was a thing, I would still run featureless in a competition and despite it being more awkward than normal, it was still better and faster than the people fumbling with getting mags out. But they were fine for range plinking.

I recently PCS'd to CA and left my "assault weapons" back home with my folks. The "military exemptions" are murky at best and prone to being dismissed. The best answer is to reach out to the sheriff's office wherever you're going to be stationed. Otherwise, I and many of my friends recommend not bothering with bringing your banned weapons into CA.

So since news isn't exciting if it tells the reality...what does the Bill REALLY say?

I gotcha fam,

Prohibiting sale, transport, etc., of assault firearms and certain firearm magazines; penalties. Expands the definition of "assault firearm" and prohibits any person from importing, selling, transferring, manufacturing, purchasing, possessing, or transporting an assault firearm. A violation is a Class 6 felony. The bill prohibits a dealer from selling, renting, trading, or transferring from his inventory an assault firearm to any person. The bill also prohibits a person from carrying a shotgun with a magazine that will hold more than seven rounds of the longest ammunition for which it is chambered in a public place; under existing law, this prohibition applies only in certain localities. The bill makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor to import, sell, barter, or transfer any firearm magazine designed to hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

It’ll have to pass first. The article linked earlier made it sound like it was doubtful. But Virginia has gotten pretty blue. If Gov Coonman is able to live down his penchant for blackface I don’t see enough backlash from this.

Banning transport and possession? I have a hard time seeing how that’s going to survive a legal challenge barring SCOTUS acting completely out of character.
