New Working Uniforms

I had the pleasure of serving under an O-6, post-big deck command, CO who was on his twilight tour and gave no shits about uniform games or other military time-wasters. He used his power to "authorize" (and evangelize!) the olive green shorts working uniform. We were already at NAB Coronado and in Type IIIs with rank on our covers, so it didn't look out of place. There was a nice boost in morale from both the relief from heat and by knowing your leadership prioritized Sailors & mission accomplishment over BS uniform games. Here's what it looked like:

I’m glad they got to wear that ridiculous “uniform” to deal with the oppressive heat Coronado is known for.

There I was, near the Hotel Coronado, it was July, sunny and almost 82F. A cool breeze was coming off the Pacific and I reached into my olive drab cargo shorts for a sweat rag...but I had already loaned it to a friend. Things were about to get tough.

? Honestly, the lack of desert-like conditions made it all the better! The Mess was flipping a shit about there not being enough "need" for shorts, while the CO was hellbent on using his political capital to make it happen. It was such a contrast to the moooostache policing that goes on in other commands.

The mess needs to learn to STFU when the man in charge says something is authorized.

As a guy who had a low tolerance for uniformity and was lucky enough to work for some COs who felt the same way I think the idea of shorts are glorious.

Shorts as a working uniform underway has been a thing for years. They were just a unit level purchase.

Never got a photo, but was sporting Tropical Khaki with pith helmet for the few days I was on Diego Garcia in the 80s.
Did 2 deployments Diego in the mid to late 80s. We wore work khakis with short pants. Choice of low quarters with knee sockets or flight boots. We all obviously wore flight boots. Pith helmets were optional and sold at the Exchange for a buck. We all bought them, wore them once for a picture and then wore ball caps.

Es wore dungaree shorts with either a dungaree shirt or squadron t-shirt. Most chose the t-shirt option.
