Questions about Navy OCS from a college student.

Hello all, I am new to this forum and feel like this forum can answer many questions I have about Navy OCS. Currently I am a Junior in college and have always wanted to be a pilot in the Navy for a while. I have talked to a few recruiters but am getting mixed answers on some questions. Here are my questions,

1.I graduate in May 2020, can I apply a year before graduation or six months?
2.I will get some flight hours in prior to applying but won't get my pilot license in time before the application due to time and financial reasons, can some flight hours/experience help on the OCS application?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Search the forums, you can easily find out both answers.

Did you talk to an OFFICER RECRUITER? A "capable" OR should know about the application eligibility.

I did talk to a officer recruiter, one said 6 months before and the other said one year before, thats why I'm confused. I have also looked through some of the posts but have been unable to find answers or getting different answers.

If you get the full PPL, you can skip IFS in Pensacola, but otherwise, flight hours don't really count toward much as far as getting accepted.

I applied a year before for OCS at the end of my junior year. Submitted the application in June after my Junior year and found out in late August. That option should be available to you. Hope that helps.

You started applying a year before you graduated? I was told by an officer recruiter it’s 6 months. I graduate in May 2020.

It's never too early to get the ball rolling for your OCS Application. ORs can get busy with other applicants so if you show the OR that you're proactive and motivated then they will assist you greatly.

Having your private pilots license can help cut down your training time significantly if you get accepted for SNA. When I went through, there was a 6 month backup for IFS and I skipped it altogether. That saved me about 8 months in training time going through flight school. If you want to get some hours for exposure, I'd say go for it. But don't do it trying to help your application, that's probably a waste of money. Good luck.

Have you done a discovery flight with an FBO? I didn't want to drop that much money to get a PPL, but doing a discovery flight was a good check to see if I didn't have any unknown fears that would come out behind the controls of an aircraft if I ever made it to IFS.

Hey just wondering will we have to sing the marine hymn at OCS it’s in the Knowledgeable items section of the study guide the Navy provides but I’m just wondering if this is true, haven’t seen anyone talking about it and I don’t wanna waist my time.

Time well spent studying for OCS is not time waisted.

Yes! Especially for RLP, some RDCs or DIs will ask for Anchors Away or the Marines’ Hymn. Also, you’ll need it in general for singing in the chow line and etc.
