Broken collarbone. 90 days til commissioning

Hello,

I am a 1/C MIDN set to commission in May. I’ve been service assigned 1390 and I couldn’t be more stoked about it.

A week ago, a fractured my collarbone. It seems to be a clean break, and by the opinions of professionals I won’t need any surgery and it should heal within a month or two.

The aviation liaison at my unit has been checking with NAMI and I’m told that I MUST go see a military doc, and that once I do, a 90 day clock starts ticking. Apparently I will not be cleared until those 90 days have passed AND I have been deemed fully healed with no restriction of movement. So if I’m all healed up and good to go in 6 weeks, it won’t matter because I have to wait 90 days regardless?

I’m now 89 days from commissioning. One option I was told of involved essentially re-designating me for a “general commission”, with the promise of getting my 1390 back after NAMI clears me. I’m apprehensive about this...sounds like classic Navy sodomy waiting to happen.

My question is this: is there any chance I can commission with my class and keep my 1390 designator? And is this 90 day clock really a thing?

Thanks in advance!

These questions can all be fielded by your class LT/Aviation LT (if you have one). This is one of those circumstances that really anyone can’t answer except your NROTC unit staff.

Find it hard to believe that your unit would try to pull a fast one on your commission status.

It is possible to redesignate fairly easily if you've already received your quota for SNA. Albeit 20 years ago, I went from a 1395 to a 1165 and back to a 1395 in the span of about 2-3 months. However I also had a front office that was 110% behind me.

What you need to find out from your adviser is how long can they hold onto you as a 1300 before someone is going to want to give you orders. Or maybe a better way to ask this is if you're being commissioned, you have to have orders to somewhere. So where will those orders be? If it's to the unit as a 1300, that gives you some flexibility. But if it's to USS SHIP (or an I-stop at a school) via the unit as a 1300, the clock will be ticking until they ORDMOD you again.

Like Rufio said, your adviser is going to be the guy that has the answers.

Gents,

I've been working with my adviser on this issue for the last week, but I wanted to see if anybody had any experience or insights outside of his knowledge. The orders I'd get would likely be to my NROTC unit, but is there a certain time limit that I can be stashed?

Also, I just spoke with my adviser and he said I can't get 1300 as an initial designator; I would have to redesignate as a SWO "temporarily".

Stash time seems to be something that can't be measured for consistency. Last year I heard of a guy being around for another semester until classing up, this year we had a guy stashed until a little after NSO.

Thought the heal time for a bone was six weeks? Why are they forcing you to change designators if you can be healthy by graduation?

The worst part of this deal should be drinking beer slows bone growth...

Also, pretty sure you aren’t the first person to commission in a down status, I find it hard to believe you have to redesignate because of a temporary injury. I’d fight that tooth and nail, even if you have to extend at the school for a few weeks on OHARP or something like it.

Fuck SWO...

You can't commission into a designator you're not qualified for. If someone gets hurt after they're commissioned, than that's a different matter. Part of the issue is the set of orders (Appointment orders vice PCS orders). If NAMI says he needs 90 days (or whatever), then he's not qualified until they say he is. You also can't commission into a LIMDU status. Again, if already in service, things change.

Stash time is dependent on quotas. This is true beyond just appointment orders. So if a quota isn't available for x time, then everyone knows that and it makes sense in the system. But you can't just come on active duty with no destination. And no, the place you're stashed isn't your destination, it's some flavor of an I-stop.

@reece my question to the unit would be when can they legally transfer you to SWO land if you're hurt? I'm guessing you'll get a nebulous answer. The next question I would ask is what about delaying your commission. Yes, it sucks to not have a job after graduating, but if they can roll you to the Summer grads, you'd be set. This may be your best bet.
