Fleet fly in 2018

If you do, can you take me for an orientation flight? Also if you have a pamphlet or something for the ANG I'd take that too...
I was really half joking, because:
1) We can't take non-rated people in the front seat flying
2) October is a bad month for me because
a) Ironically I am going to Norfolk for DLQs
b) Going to Marietta for annual MTP/ME ride
c) Other instructor is out of town at IFE course and we have a back-log of RL progressions, annual evals and PC evals

Seriously though, going would probably be productive. It's a hard transition for many reasons, but surprisingly rewarding.

There was a fleet fly-in at NASP a few weeks back and the LT giving the presentation for the helo community mentioned that a squadron would be based out of Europe in the near future. Anyone know if this is just speculation at this point? I haven't been able to find any news about any squadrons moving across the pond.

R guys can chime in, but I think it's certainly in the works, to have an HSM squadron out of Rota, right? I wouldn't get on getting it though - don't choose helos just for that one opportunity.

If I had to choose between HSC & HSM, I'd be going HSM these days. Good mission, good places to live. Not sure how the community is, but from what I've seen it seems like it's not as HSLish anymore.

Yes, things are in motion for a FDNF-East. The plan changed a couple of times and I'm not sure where it ended up, but some COAs included having an already existing squadron send a Det and then a squadron would coalesce around it, eventually becoming a full squadron, or just building a squadron out-right and putting it there. I think the second option was what was decided.

Hmmm. Maybe I should pursue an option to finish out my time in the Navy.

In general, I agree and tell students if they are even on the two or don't know what they want, choose HSM. There are several students though who want to live in Guam or Norfolk, are absolutely SOLD on doing SAR, and then there's the fewer group that no matter what you say firmly think they'll be doing SOF for real every day in your conventional HSC squadron, and finally, a select few who are sold on going to 85 one day; these folks, sure, I'll recommend HSC to, but cage their expectations as best I can (i.e.: yes, you'll do things more than just SAR, yes 85 is highly selective, no, in general, you won't be doing actual inserts and extracts of SEALs on a daily basis but there is a huge value in ensuring they get good training with helicopters during their workups, etc.).
