Fleet fly in 2018

So the fleet fly in is next month and I’m trying to make sure I ask the right questions for each community brief. Looking back on your career what information would you have liked to know before you filled out your dream sheet.

That's a good start. If you want a really good answer about a community, phrase your question critically and specifically. Don't phrase it open-ended, such as, "Can you tell me what you liked about ____?"

Ask questions? BS, you know what you want to do already. Pointy or blunt nose, fast or slow.
What you need to do is have a DRINKEX at the club afterward and have a few. Listen to the stories and unvarnished answers from the fly-in folks. That will be better than mass brief answers.

I may have dated myself here, studs still drink with instructors at the club Friday nights right? FML if they don’t.

Yep, you just dated yourself by at least fifteen years.

Sorry.

(And the club at Whiting got torn down almost ten years gone now, c2012.)

Thought so. About 10 years ago I stopped by Oceana on a Friday night with a Q room across the street. I walk over and it darken ship/closed....on a Friday night. I died a little that evening.

Seriously? You know, I was forced to purchase a mug there as a young ensign. What am going to do with that now?

I’m going to state this rhetorically, but do “communities” even matter now? For Navy it’s more like, “do I want to fly a 53, and hardly fly - or fly a 60 and deploy haze grey”

Pretty big difference between HSC and HSM.

As a student everyone including myself put HSC down first. It’s just what everyone did.

I’m really glad I got HSM though. The community has an identity and an ever expanding mission. I’m sure there are HSC guys that are all about it, but every good buddy I had in flight school that got HSC talks about how aimless the community is. Most of them of them are leaving the community for good starting with their shore tour.

HSC is crap. Three massive changes in direction over the past 8 years. Fielding weapons with no real thought to how actual employment would work versus what weapons would be a better idea. Needs the HS HC split if you want what they’re looking for. Just because they merged the platforms doesn’t mean they should have merged the mission. Just my two cents though.

Oh, it’s not HSC vs the world, it’s doing a fine job of shooting itself in the foot.

Knowing what I know now: Go HSM CVW. HSM has a far brighter future and more relevant mission. CVW will always be the bright center of NAE and the squadrons are smaller JO wise so there's likely better fitrep breakout potential than in an EXP squadron with a million JOs. I'd also add to strongly consider Japan because youll deploy and fly more. Plus you have the rest of your life to live in America.

Do NOT even consider going HM unless you have little man syndrome and just have to ground turn an old and busted big Helo. Note that I said ground turn vice fly. Actually, if you have little man syndrome I'd still recommend HSM CVW but just go buy an F350 dualie.
