Its always been my opinion that Mess Stewards, FSA's, folks who work in the squadron hanger First LT div, etc all be CIV contractors. Nothing more demotivating than being assigned to wash clothes or serve meals. The Navy wardroom ritual is also a little looney.
Who currently works the mess? Wardroom rather

I saw that as a mid on my surface cruise. I immediately didn’t like it and would rather just eat with everyone else.

Typically E-3 and below loaned out from their regular jobs on a 90 day rotation.

Being prior enlisted, I feel the way they are treated by most officers is stupid and embarrassing.
To clarify: Mess cranks also work the mess decks as well. It's not just a wardroom thing.

When I mess cranked on my first submarine, I was on the mess deck/galley. We had one mess crank assigned to the wardroom to help the wardroom assigned "culinary specialist/cook."

We were on 90 day mess cranking duty that started the day we checked aboard. In port was not bad, regular work day. Cranking underway sucked balls. My mess cranking hours were typically 0500 - 2200 daily, outside of which I had to work on sub quals, rating quals, sleep, etc.

Handling your mess cranking tour with a good attitude paid off in spades with the crew.

Oh, to clarify, yes, somebody's gotta prepare the food, just like somebody's gotta scrub the head, etc. It's having three or four guys just standing there taking food orders like a waiter/waitress that is an inefficient use of manpower. Cranking is fine, it's waiting that is weird.

The worst is when they take your dirty dishes...which inevitably leads to entitled fucks just leaving their shit at the table when they leave.

Another reason why I enjoyed my LCS tour when it came to meals. One line for everyone, separate messes, clean your table/tray on your own. When I experienced a DDG wardroom during lunch for the first time it was so awkward.

And the Chief's mess, who usually (but not always) gets the better performing cranks. At least on the smaller of small boys.

On the carriers too, the smart ones made a good impression and it would pay off.

The CO had a few good ones as well.

The way they are treated really depends on the people in the CPO mess, wardroom, etc..... we had some CPO's who were dicks that treated those guys bad and it was wrong, good people will treat people well no matter that person's job.

Did the Wardroom usually tip their mess cranks on payday?

On Iwo Jima (the old one) and Enterprise, the Chiefs ponied up a few bucks for the mass cranks.

It was insurance that there was always cold cuts, cheese and peanut butter available in the mess for that 0300 fridge raid.

I never expected the mess cranks to take my tray, if they came by and asked before I left ok, but if not I took my own to the skullery. Never forget where you come from. Fortunately I never did TAD on the ship, as my squadron was short on AMEs, I actually volunteered to change orders to my first command, and loved it. VF-31 long live Felix!

To whom I say "Clean up your shit! You're going by the bus counter on your way out, anyway."

If we just all ate together and didn't have to pay mess dues (to eat the exact same food), I'd be OK with that. Let's keep WRI/II open for midrats ith that kickass CS2 who loves to cook up great stuff though- some traditions really do make the Boat more livable.

Do you think the troops would be generally more resentful that we have our own mess, or that they get to watch every single one of us exercise head of the line privileges while they queue up for an hour to eat after us? That's a toss up.
