Also, the nose strut was supposed to act as a "stored energy" strut…giving the aircraft a slight nose-up nudge once the launch bar disconnected at the end of the cat stroke.

Yeah, really two stages... Never paid attantion on this, thanks a lot. First dropping to catch the shuttle, second even deeper when the Shooter fires to possess additional AOA just off the cat. Brits on their bridle-launching F-4Ks doubled the nose strut in lenght just to add the AOA from the beginning. But generally the same approach: to calibrate the height of the nose by strut to help the launch. Thank you, gents.
 
Oh by the way, about gears and F-15. Have read that deployed in Afghan F-15Es while heavy laden with ordnance, had the limit for turning when taxiing, otherwise the tyres could creep out of the rims. Noted that Navy F-14s deployed on a carriers wandering near Karachi had about one third of Strike Eagles load, evidently due to the cat limit, but again, is this a problem for tyres, given the iron deck instead of the concrete airfield?
 
The first rule of taxiing with heavy ordnance loads is we do not talk about taxiing with heavy ordnance loads. That's the secret sauce, dude, and the Russian navy is just going to have to figure this out for themselves.


I can tell you that the problem goes away entirely if you use iron tyres and rubber flight decks, so try that. But you didn't hear it from me... :cool:

Uh, as good as it gets! The question was about an airplane which is goner for a decade. Ok, let me explain. The last thing we will ever have on a flight deck - and in this logic it's better to have a glass one - everybody will be as carefull, as s/he can be :) - is a heavy laden airplane. It was STOVL, now it is STOBAR, so the worst enemy of an airplane is its weight. You know which nickname carrier-borne Flanker (Su-33) has here? "Dove Of Peace", as it is generally certified only for IR missiles and iron bombs. It never flies from STOBAR with full load, even of iron freefall bombs.
And, given quite soon end of an aircraft carriers as a weapon systems at about 2050, we will never have this experience.
But I have never heard that Backfire (Tu-22M2) was limited in turning angle while taxiing armed even with three Kitchens, by the way:)

There's always a kind of uncertainty what the lady who's allowed to touch the military aircraft will do. Sometimes some drunk whore tries to suck the refueling probe, but usually it is just a stupid pictures like that. Really, your F-14 culture is a basis for envy, as no airplanes, nor navy ships even coupled with full set of drivers here attract females. For short, which weapon system is the most demanded for particular country, namely this is attractive for this country's women to pose around.
 
My fellow high school classmate went to Air Force engineering college and being commissioned into Air Defence Forces, a separate from Air Force back then, took first tour as engineer in MiG-31 air regiment on Kamchatka Pen, seems to be 865th Reg, if I remember correctly. Anything that could fly and is longer than 20 meters here is "ship" instead of "airplane" and the pilot of it is "CO". Thus, Foxhound is a ship with its CO. Usually O-3, about 25-26 years old. So, once such CO after landing made a report that he was locked on SR-71 for four minutes with all missiles, trailing the Blackbird at the expense of exceeded burner time and almost bingo fuel. This was not a task, just for fun. When my friend asked him if he was ready to pay for a turbines' repair, he have heard: "Fuck yeah. What else can keep you warm and alive, after you quit drinking and there aren't high speed highways here to drive the car at a goods speed?" My friend called this "true fighter spirit" in a letter (a good old paper mail back then). No white uniform, no bars with piano, no patchy leather jackets, no clever blondis - nothing from Top Gun movie but the spirit... Second and last thing about that guy I've heard is that he was fun of Lynyrd Skynyrd and played "That Smell" on acoustic guitar. I'm not digging in the Texas stoner rock but can appreciate this.
Nothing to compare with F-14 or F-15 spirit but this, generally.
Fuck this tyres and decks, let's speak about spirit. And chicks will follow :)
