Lasers and the Navy Pilot

Huneph

PPC/MC
I know this is extremely random and I didn't know which forum to put this in so I thought I'd just ask it here.

In watching the news tonight it talked about a C-130 pilot that had a laser shined at him on approach today and it made me think of the increasing danger to pilots from stupid people on the ground and also laser protective eyewear.

I know they have these for purchase for civilian pilots and have considered purchasing a pair several times. Are Navy pilots allowed to wear them while flying, or is there a visor fitted to the helmet which negates them?

If there is no military solution could I use a pair of civilian glasses during flight school?

We have laser eye protection for higher power Class IV stuff.

No, you don't need them in flight training. I've been lased by a jackass with a laser pointer. Just waved off, made a note, and contacted the local authorities.

If you go hornets, you'll be carrying the biggest swinging dick laser there is, the ATFLIR. Can't tell between a bush or a person for shit, but you can blind camels and terrorists at like 50 miles.

There's no point in buying LEP since you won't know what the laser is that might get you, and the LEP has to be rated for that wavelength. Dudes lazing aircraft are horrible people, but this isn't something you need to worry about.

I obviously can't speak with confidence about the topic in every location that you may find yourself in this situation, but my jurisdiction has made cases in the past. When we locate the offender we also forward the case info on the FBI as well. I'm sure there are protocols on your end, but don't not report them thinking that the local police will blow you off.

Helo guy in my unit got lased by a guy from a hotel and the dumbass kept doing it long enough for the crew to talk the cops onto his location. Last he heard the guy was actually convicted.

The last couple that we have made, the pilot gave us a GPS coordinate and we were able to go straight to the house.

I think that most judges know intuitively that it's not a good thing to get lased while you were trying to fly.

@GroundPounder Reporting them as able to local law enforcement was our protocol and we had a good working relationship with LE in Hampton Roads through our Type wing. Sometimes we couldn't get a firm fix, but other times they were dumb enough to let us go right to them. Repeat "unlocatable" incidents were NOTAMed.

I've never heard of any LE blowing this off. The issue is, legally, the Navy can't (legally) sit on top of the offender and do a talk-on. Has it happened before? Yup, but again, legally, you have to be careful. That said, every incident that I've heard of first person has resulted in active LE presence, even if they don't get the guy (that night). And even though I've never been exposed, I GREATLY appreciate LE's vigor in the matter.

Lasers event are a big deal in the civilian world.. Had a few buddies get tagged and they all lost vision for various amounts of time. Last week going into Vegas, Aproach was reporting a laser event so my First Officer had his checklist up blocking the window on the right side of the jet.. (Was reported North of the field on 3 mile final)

I've been lased twice and spotlighted once. One lasing incident was completely by accident. A rooftop bar with one of those spinning laser show projectors managed to line up just right and hit us while we were on approach. Thankfully the exposure was very brief and we could see where it came from. LE went and told them that they might not want to point that thing into the sky. Problem solved.

The second was over seas and we never located where it came from and we were never looking directly into the laser.

The one that made me maddest was getting spotlighted by a fishing boat while I was in the pattern at Jax. A guy in a crab boat decided to look at the pretty plane overhead at 9pm. I happened to be looking straight down at him when he decided to point his search light at us. We told tower and full stopped and the security guys actually went out to tell the idiot to stop. I don't think there was an arrest.
