Perhaps a thread for photographs of the Navy's ships, subs and boats - past and present - in action. Post at will - starting with one of the most famous: USS Pennsylvania leading the fleet.

President Reagan bringing back the big guns in the Cold War. I'll see your Kirov and raise you a Missouri. Show me.

President Kennedy skippered PT-109, similar to the boat similar below.

After returning to duty following the sinking of the PT-109, JFK was given a modified PT-59 designed to attack barges: no torpedoes but upgunned with 40mm cannons forward and aft.

I was the conning officer on TR for this photo.
I was a shooter and got my mini-boss qual on TR. A great ship with lots of history. In the mid 2000's, I was told she had the most combat time of any of our carriers. The museum off the hangar bay has some great memorabilia and history of Theodore Roosevelt and his family.

How is this different than the existing photo thread

The other thread appeared to be aircraft specific, I thought another thread tailored towards ships might be nice. If y'all think it is redundant, by all means go ahead and move it into the main photo thread.

I was the last Nuclear Weapons Officer on any carrier and had the last Nuclear Weapons Safety Inspection of any CV (one of two inspections that would get a CV CO fired within hours of a failure - the other being a reactor inspection (at least in my time)). I was OOD everything (GQ, Unrep, Sea & Anchor) and as a O3 the only non-CDR/CAPT CDO Underway (I got to give the green deck for aircraft ops occasionally - the odd traps/cats like the COD outside of normal flight ops.). I got my SWO pin on TR too. It was a pretty rewarding tour.

White Christmas? Seems like a few photos of the Great White Fleet would be appropriate. Teddy Roosevelt announcing the arrival of America on the world stage. Speak softly and carry a big stick, or in today's parlance, Tweet in all capitals and carry a yuge stick....

The Montana class not only had that extra main gun turret, but the 5 inch guns were a 54 calibre vice the 38 calibre currently in use in the fleet. I think we posted this earlier, but the Montana hull design was used for the Midway class carrier. http://www.midwaysailor.com/midway/history.html

The Japanese and the Germans both had designs for bigger battleships as well.

One of the thoughts that keeps percolating is whether we will ever see a return of non-aircraft carrier capital ships. As everything is a race between sword and shield, I wonder if a generation from now that directed energy weapons and rail guns will be able to make a near impervious defense as long as the ship has sufficient electric power to sustain the weapons.
