OCS Confused on the Board Selection Process

Hey everyone,

It's my first post, so go easy on me. But I was curious as to how the whole 'Board' processing goes? I was recently told by my OSO that I would be selected, no doubt, for the upcoming OCC class in January, but going in as an Aviation slot, does that mean it would be harder to get in? Another candidate in my area said he has already been pre-selected from a previous board because our Office only has 1 spot for Air contracts, does that mean if I get selected for this upcoming class in January, I would have to be moved to the summer OCC class?

If this doesn't make any sense, I can try and clarify it better.

Thanks everyone,

Justin

Justin, your post is very confusing. First off, it sounds like you are pursuing aviation and those boards take place about every 3 months. The next is confirmed to take place on December 1st. Once that board convenes and adjourns (same day), results will be released within a few days. Usually within 1-2 months after selection, your OCS report date would be announced and your recruiter should let you know. Then, within about 3 months of reporting, your FINSEL (Final Select Letter) will be released and you can be sworn in. If reporting quickly, the FINSEL should be issued quick. As for quotas per office, etc., there is no truth to that. Nationwide, applicants go to one board. There are 26 Navy Recruiting Districts nationwide and no attempt is made to divide up "selects" evenly, fairly, etc. As for OCS classes, they convene every three weeks on a Sunday and last 12 weeks. Graduation is always on a Friday.

I hope this helps! Ask away if you have more questions.

I'm kind of confused here now. So what you're post says is that you get selected, told you're selected, wait a couple months for a report date, wait a couple more months for a finsel, and wait a couple more months until you attend OCS?

So you wait to report and then wait for a FINSEL?

I'm kind of confused here now.
Step 1: Assemble officer package and submit to board.
Step 2: Package goes "PRO BOARD" which indicates it has passed all the QA checks and program manager and WILL be seen by the board.
Step 3: Board meets and you're either a SELECT or non-select.
Step 4: If a SELECT, your recruiter calls you and notifies...nothing more at that time.
Step 5: Recruiter and you wait for a comment in CIRIMS that identifies OCS Report Date. If reporting sooner than later, this could happen at the same time as Step 6.
Step 6. FINSEL (Final Select Letter) posted in CIRIMS. Recruiter should forward this to you. It allows the recruiter and their processor to generate all of the official documents to swear you in. You are sworn in as a E-5.
Step 7: Report to OCS on the Sunday you were assigned to.

He's going Marines, not Navy. The process is similar but different at the same time.

Jweaver, my OSO also told me and another candidate that we would be selected for an aviation slot as well so take what you hear with a grain of salt. OCC board 218 was the first board to pre-select for OCC 219 meaning that there will be less aviation slots available than usual meaning that it will be a little harder to get into.

If you're unfamiliar with the whole process here's the gist: You'll be doing paperwork first and will be sent to MEPS to get your beanbag squeezed. Then you need to schedule a civilian dental appointment on your own time. After this you will win a trip to Pensacola under Marines orders for a NAMI physical. You must pass the NAMI physical before your kit can go to board. NPQ here is a showstopper. Your OSO will get ahold of you one day before your kit goes to board to schedule your PFT (max scores are 20 pullups, 100 cruches, and an <18 minute, 3 mile run.) Your kit then goes to board where you're either select or non-select based on the magically defined, whole-person, 152 point under the hood checklist. You've got a better chance if you've got a 300 PFT and a 3.5+ GPA in a STEM area, everyone else will. If selected you then get processed for the first available OCC class.

For some reason I just got all of these replies in one email. A few things to clarify:
-I am in the USMC route, aviation contracted.
-I have been to MEPS, passed the ASTB-E, and then NAMI and passed their tests
-I go to a very competitive college (Georgia Tech) and run for the track and cross-country team, with a 3.2 GPA, not STEM unfortunately, but Finance, so Math is always a must
-My PFT is 300, even runners have some sort of muscles for pull-ups
I am going up for the Selection Board this Saturday (November 14th) and of course, am taking everything with a grain salt that my OSO says, but I have asked both him and the SSgt have said that I should like cold weather because it looks like I'll be hitting the Quigley in freezing weather from past boards and applicants they have sent up and have been selected.

I guess my whole confusion is how does a pre-selection work. The one candidate I was talking about has been pre-selected for this upcoming OCC class. He then told me that our OSO office only has 1 aviation slot per OCC class and if you are selected, you'll be pushed to pre-selected automatically because of the 1 slot rule that we supposedly have. If that's the case, wouldn't there be a bottleneck in the system? Or would my OSO tell me about the '1 slot' rule in the beginning and not have me contract for the upcoming Board?
