Ensignmobiles are not supposed to be practical, quit trying to bring sense into the process.
Good point. Disregard my last and get one of these instead:

Gun cabinet, bespoke interior, self-replenishing liquor, and if that wasn't enough, it's also a car!

So I recently re-read the thread, and wrote down a few questions and ideas that came to mind.

There seems to be some disagreement over whether the trip to OCS is a PCS move or TDY move. Can anyone answer this definitively?

Also, I've heard some discussion about how much time given before reporting to school in Pcola, but does anyone know how much time is given to future Intel officers before they report to Virginia Beach? (I was told that Intel school was there, I might be wrong).

Also, if the Navy would pay for a plane ticket or reimburse for driving expenses, what about Amtrak?

Thanks guys.

Also disregard my last post here. You don't need a car at Newport, you will get OHARP or at least 2 weeks between Newport and Pensacola. My advice is to treat it like college and make friends with someone who has a car. Also the old trick of keeping stuff in your car and walking over there on the weekends doesn't seem like a great idea. Not that you may get caught , but the benefits aren't that great. Most DI (not mine) gave their class their cell phone for the weekends some time after RLP. Don't expect it, don't count on it, and don't complain just because the class ahead or behind you has them, every DI is different. That being said we all were given our cell phones on holidays for when the base was shut down and then gave them back for training. If someone did leave their cell phone in your car you would have to walk all the way over there to get it. Besides that the only benefit to having a car is being the DD or chauffeur on liberty.

As far as orders go. NFO's will get a PCS move. Pilots will get a TDY unless they are married than they will get PCS and orders on to Whitting Field after API. As always there are always exceptions.

@Kayeshorter ,

I will be reporting to OCS on 10 AUG and after commissioning will attend Intel school. I've asked some of the same questions to my recruiter and here on AW, among others, and here's what I know...

First, your time at OCS is officially a TAD (the Navy's verison of a TDY, basically).

Second, the Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center is indeed located in Virginia Beach, at the NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex. As for timing between the end of OCS and the beginning of Intel training, see here:

http://www.airwarriors.com/community/index.php?threads/ocs-and-niobc.40674/

Finally, as for Amtrak, I am not certain as to reimbursement policy, but I would suggest doing a search on AW; I'm pretty certain someone on here has asked about Amtrak before (see: http://www.airwarriors.com/communit...-and-still-no-orders.41653/page-3#post-774896)

Hopefully my two cents helps. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your input and for pointing me in the right direction, that link answered quite a few questions for me! I really appreciate it.

Seeing as I'll have BAH in Virginia Beach, I think that driving to Newport is the most logical plan for me. I'm going to load up all of my things and drop them off at my Uncle's house in Richmond on my way up so that I'll have everything I need once I graduate OCS.

Good luck at OCS vlad, see you on the other side!

Seconded. Not worth the extra stay. Never again will you be able to be without phone save deployment...enjoy it.

I have just read all 21 pages of this thread and I am not any closer to a decision about whether or not to drive to OCS for class date 18JAN2015. I have a reliable, 10 year old, low mileage, well maintained 2wd truck. I like the idea that someone mentioned earlier in the thread of partying my way up the East Coast! Haha. I also have no aversion to long distance road trips (1k miles for me from here in ATL). I road my Harley 7k miles around the country this summer so 1k miles with a heater and a cup of coffee seems easy. I guess I'm asking that given the recent revelation of no pov trips, what's the general consensus from the BTDT guys here?

Situations like this where I can't make a quick and firm decision are foreign to me and piss me off! Haha

I say bring it. Then after commissioning, you can just throw all your gear inside and get on I-95 back down to Atlanta before you continue on to P'cola. If you try to get back home in one straight shot, you'll probably need to spend the night in Rocky Mount or something, so plan ahead for that.
At OCS, disconnect the battery after you park it so it doesn't die on you, which is what happened to two of my classmates (but not to me, although my truck was only about two years old at that point). If you wanna be a good shipmate, bring some jumper cables so that if your classmates' vehicles (or even yours) die, you can give the battery a jump. If it has several seats (mine's regular cab, so it's only two and a half seats including the driver), it's nice to have an alternative to shelling out some money on a cab, assuming you can get a DD.
Oh, and if you'll be doing any driving in wintertime, you might wanna put bags of sand/gravel/kitty litter in the bed to put some weight on the back tires (I'm assuming it's rear wheel drive) and a shovel if you need to dig yourself out. Make sure your tires are all-season and do other wintery things that you wouldn't think to do in Georgia but are necessary for snowy New England weather. Last Christmas in upstate New York was relatively green, but you never know.

In regards to your amtrak question I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes. For no other reason than the fact that the JFTR authorizes you to travel by cruise ship when PCSing OCONUS. You will get charged leave for the extra days versus a plane ticket but still reimbursed up to the cost of the normal plane ticket price. Train seems more reasonable.

Been rolling around in my '06 RAV4 since 2009. The wife has an '05 Camry. Given the sorry state of student loans we both owe, some days I think we'll be buried in these cars.

Hello, this is to JDtoSupply, once you enter into the service, especially the active duty side, you can apply for the Public Service Loan Forgivement Program which is based on your income. Instead of paying 600 dollars or so a month, I now pay 74-143 a month. It stays this rate for 10 years. I cannot pay anymore of what they request, which is fine with me, but my loans where 70,000 because of online classes and now 9 years later from now I would cut it by half; the rest will be forgiven.

It'll be awhile before I put in 120 payments but thank you for the heads up. Will definitely take a look at it in the not so distant future

Just checking in here, I drove my POV from San Francisco to Newport a few months ago before I started OCS. I claimed 9 travel days, and since I used campsites and drive a car that's good on gas I was able to pocket around $1700. I'd definitely recommend driving, especially if you're coming from the West Coast. I made a decent amount of money and got to see quite a few states that i'd never visited before!

As a guy who flew to OCS, I would highly recommend driving. You can make money on the drive. When you become a candi-o, having a car can be a great way to enjoy your liberty weekends instead of relying on taxis. Not to mention, if you are as unfortunate as myself and several of my classmates, you COULD get stuck in Newport after graduation for a few months waiting for your NAMI clearance. Being bored out of your mind and living in King Hall blows, especially on the weekends.

The NRD I was at we discouraged driving, especially in the winter, they had had several in the past few years before I arrived that ended up being stuck for days due to road conditions, or taking much longer due to road conditions and so they were bumped from their classes, they were put in the next class but they were told they may have to go home and wait for a new class date.
