Airborne All the Way!!!
Speaking of Brit's & Aussies, my dad was a cryptographer in the Army towards the end of the Korean War.

A few months after the cease fire his unit was moved to an area between a British unit & an Aussie unit. The Brit's & Aussies both received a rum ration, which they saved in order to throw a party to which they also invited my dad's unit.

The British unit was the Queen's Own Guards - or some gibberish like that - and they hosted the party in a quonset hut. One of Queen's Own Guards traditions was to "defend the queen's honor" against all comers.

Well after about 30 minutes of drinking one of the Aussies hollers out "F!*k the bloody queen!!". My dad said suddenly all hell broke loose & it was all he & his buddies could do to get out of the way.

The Brit's & Aussies fought like they were bitter enemies for about 15 minutes then made up like they were old friends who hadn't seen each other in years. A little while later another Aussie shouted "F!@k the bloody queen!!" and it was on again just like before. Once again after about 15 minutes the two groups made up. This happened about 2 or 3 more times. Crazy suckers liked to fight just as much or more than they liked to drink. :D

I read in an article where the Air Force is planning to retire the U-2 fleet by 2011, and replace it with the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk. Anybody have any info on this?

Edit: Here's the article in question from defenseindustrydaily.com:

US Plans to Retire B-52s, C-21s, F-117 & U-2 for more F-22s
Posted 12-Jan-2006 14:53

Yeah, another plan cooked up by the Air Force staff that is obsessed with everything F-22 and UAV and could care less about anything else. This was a budget proposal from the Air Force/DOD, it has to go through Congress before it actually happens. It has been stunted for now, like the B-52 proposal for something like the 10th year in a row, by some opposition from Congress and elsewhere in the US government. My office provided data on the U-2 to several offices that requested it, with them trying to save it.

While the Global Hawk is a pretty nifty peice of machinery it is not a one for one replacement that it is touted to be for the U-2 and has had numerous and well documented teething problems. Another office we work closely with has a RQ-4 pilot as the resident UAV expert (he flew CH-46's in the Navy and went to instruct T-37's, joined the AF Reserve and went into the airlines....and promptly went back on active duty with the AF after Sept 11th) and he has some choice words about the program, though he is a believer. Ironically, his boss is a U-2 pilot, as was the boss's predecessor (whose career path went A-10's, F-16's, F-18 exchange tour and then U-2's....lucky ******* :icon_smil )

I was born a decade too late... if it was up to me the USMC would be getting the superhornet and the JSF wouldn't even exist... Its a great aircraft... the supersonic ability as well as stealth is great... but its got the weight issue, it only has one engine...its expensive and will require us to downside our current communities. VMFA-134 and VMFA(AW)-242 are already on the chopping block from what I've heard... Mostly I just don't want to see the hornet go away in the Marine community... it'll also mean the end of Marine fighter squadrons deploying on Navy carriers...Everything will be off of LHAs just like the harriers. I mean you can buy two super-bees for the price of one JSF...as for the F-22... $185 million per aircraft? you could buy nearly 4 F-15C AESA-equipped aircraft for that.... and UAVs... SCREW UAVs...!!!! =) ok ok, end of rant.

Ya! Zab is back! Not dead in a gutter 'eh?

Close, but not quite. Nice to come back to one of my (least) favorite topics ever.

You've got a lot of issues confused. Many of them are not related. I'm too tired to point out them out right now. Maybe later.

If you really want to fly Hornets off a navy carrier, then join the navy. That's not a shot at you or the navy, just a suggested course of action.

I'm Marine green brother... no can do. As far as issues confused... I'm just going off of gouge given to me by hornet pilots. The downsizing isn't just because of JSF...the new tac air integration plan between the USMC and USN is part of it, as well as the armed services force reduction plan. The pilots I talked to also seemed to think that we couldn't afford to upgrade to the super-bee right away, and that it was more prudent to wait for the JSF. Any comments are welcomed. S/F

That's the problem then.....listening to Hornet pilots.:D

There are many issues leading to the restructuring of the aviation community, as you may know. Like it or not, the Marine Corps is going to the F-35. We have to make do with the assets that we have until it comes on line. With crashing about 5 or so Hornets and Harriers each year, along with jets just getting too old to fly, the downsizing will continue.

The Rhino is a good plane, but it is not the leap forward in technology that the Corps was looking for. An argument could be made that we didn't need a giant leap forward, but you'd have that argument with DC Air and The Man himself.

As for flying off carriers or L-class ships (the short bus of the navy), we go where the Marines are. The Marine Hornets flying in Carrier Air Wings was a drug deal in the TAI plan. I'm not a fan of it. We lose control of our fire support assets to the navy. As I've posted many times before, I am against anything that gives our fire support to another service, no matter how much they say they'll support us with it later.

That's not a shot at the navy, that's just institutional distrust with a grain or two of experience. I'm sure about 20 people will post remarks saying that the navy supported the Marines in OIF 1 and OEF and be generally insulted by my attitude about this. I acknowlege their support there, and they did very well in general. My problem is that as long as we don't have control of our air power, we're one commander away from not getting it when we need it.

If you want to fly in support of Marines, you need to be where they are and be under Marine command. That means forward deployed or with the MEU.

I never thought of it that I way. I thought that, although Marine squadrons were aboard Navy carriers, they were still at the disposal of Marine commanders. Apparently I was mistaken. In that case, I completely agree. Have you read Jay Stout's new book "Hammer From Above" by any chance? Theres some great harrier stories in there talking about operations from the LHD/LPD/LHAs in OIF I ... goes to show that you guys are there when we need you. Although I can't shake my love of the hornet... I will say that the F-35 is an impressive aircraft... anybody would say that. And one of the chief gripes coming from the hornet pilots I talked to was that "their aircraft were 'breaking' regularely" ... the maintenance Marines were having to put in extra hours keeping those things flying.

The main thing that I don't want to see go away is a 2-seater night attack variant like the D-model hornets... or the F/A-18F (if it were chosen for the role) ... I'm sure the JSF can accomplish the AW- night attack role... but as well as a hornet? I'll miss that "crew" concept... and whats gonna happen to Marine option NFOs? Are they all gonna become ECMOs?

Regardless, the JSF is a good airframe and you're right, we've got to make do with what they're going to give us. I'm sure the harrier community is pretty excited to get them... you guys will be stealthy and supersonic now... good times. Thanks.
