Tex_Hill said:I read in an article where the Air Force is planning to retire the U-2 fleet by 2011, and replace it with the Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk. Anybody have any info on this?
Edit: Here's the article in question from defenseindustrydaily.com:

I was born a decade too late... if it was up to me the USMC would be getting the superhornet and the JSF wouldn't even exist... Its a great aircraft... the supersonic ability as well as stealth is great... but its got the weight issue, it only has one engine...its expensive and will require us to downside our current communities. VMFA-134 and VMFA(AW)-242 are already on the chopping block from what I've heard... Mostly I just don't want to see the hornet go away in the Marine community... it'll also mean the end of Marine fighter squadrons deploying on Navy carriers...Everything will be off of LHAs just like the harriers. I mean you can buy two super-bees for the price of one JSF...as for the F-22... $185 million per aircraft? you could buy nearly 4 F-15C AESA-equipped aircraft for that.... and UAVs... SCREW UAVs...!!!! =) ok ok, end of rant.
I'm Marine green brother... no can do. As far as issues confused... I'm just going off of gouge given to me by hornet pilots. The downsizing isn't just because of JSF...the new tac air integration plan between the USMC and USN is part of it, as well as the armed services force reduction plan. The pilots I talked to also seemed to think that we couldn't afford to upgrade to the super-bee right away, and that it was more prudent to wait for the JSF. Any comments are welcomed. S/F
