Just got moved to Corpus Christi (IP) and would love to do some sailing. The wind is always blowing here and it should be great sailing, but unlike Hampton Roads there is nowhere to rent a 25'-30' sailboat. I've contemplated buying a used 2006 Catalina C250 MkII wing keel (sleeps 4 adults or 2 + 3 kids), but I'd want to keep it in the water and when you factor in all the monthly expenses it's just too much to justify for the 3-4 days a month I'd probably spend on it. I'm looking into forming a sailing club or rental company using that boat. If you think that's something you'd be interested in joining/using give me some feedback. Based on my past rental experiences and comparisons online. I'd probably be looking for $125-150 per weekend day and $75-$100 for week days.

If you like sailing, you might love windsurfing...it has a learning curve, but once you learn to get in the foot straps and breakthrough the planing barrier (where one's board speed exceeds the wind speed), it's easy to get hooked on this sport. Corpus Christi is one of the best places for windsurfing in the U.S. Like learning to fly, lessons are essential! http://www.corpuschristiwindsurfing.com/lessons.html

I'm not a Catalina fan, and in my experience wing keels and water ballast aren't a great combo for 20kts of wind and the short period yet deep waves you get in bay in Corpus. But, a lot of people like Catalina boats so I guess to each their own. If you're just looking for a couple days a month I'd look into a catamaran. Shallow draft, much more deck space, and they can be just as fun (this coming from a devout monohull type of guy). The only problem there is finding a slip that can accommodate the beam of a cat boat.

Worldwinds is a great place to learn how to windsurf. They also have really good gear.

If you are interested in racing more high performance boats (both dinghies and keelboats) there is an active Melges 24 fleet there, as well as a couple of skiff types (I14, and a couple of 49ers). There is a guy there who is always looking for crew. There is a fellow IP there who is a good buddy of mine, both he and his wife are huge into sailing. PM me if you want his name.

Show up on Wednesday evenings near the bay club downtown with a good 12 pack or bottle and you should be all set. Great bunch of guys, had a blast at the regatta this summer.
