Interestingly, that was not the case during my period at the TRACOM. As with everything else, I think it cycled, but P-3s weren't sought after. I think part of that may have been the glut of P-3 IPs we had at the time (there were almost no Navy helo IPs wing-wide at KNSE and even fewer Navy jet guys) and the dissatisfaction with their community at the time. From what I recall from reading here, P-3s started to swing back into favor after I left.
I'm dated and I realize it. But back in my day, the number of guys wanting P-3s and jets wee about the same. Helos weren't really sought after.
So what percentage have jet grades and choose helos.....?
Technically, that is not the verboten question....
Yeah, but your sample size is small, I would argue almost all Marines... When I was in South Field, I would argue that probably 60-75% of the guys I went through Whiting with (that were Marines) actually wanted helos. My selection card was "1. Helos, 2. Helos, 3. Helos" another buddy put down "1. Space Shuttle, 2. SR-71, 3. Helos". Navy guys? That's another story, I would say >50% wanted jets and generally moped around South Field until FAM-1.All of them.
I've been told that (unprompted) dozens of times on deployment.
