I was actually hoping to be able to get my taxes completed prior to OCS. A quick call on Monday to the company I interned with over the previous summer, so as to determine when I can expect my W-2, will determine whether I file for an extension.

Yeah, it's kind of a bummer. I have my W-2s, but no way I'll have all the other docs I need in time.

That sucks. Fortunately, I only need my W-2. The wife's already came in the mail. Considering that I've never had her do the taxes before, I don't think this is the time to just dump this in her lap while I trot off to OCS...

Your wife should probably learn to do the taxes this year. Goodness knows PenguinGuy is usually off doing the whole "see the world" part of Navy life come tax season. It makes sense to have both of you versed in how to handle the finances. Oh, and don't forget to get her POAs!!!!!

I'm lucky enough to be employed by an accountant until Friday. :D He got our W-2s done first thing this year. I'm just waiting these stupid 1098s from the lenders of my student loans so I can claim my loan interest. Worst case scenario, I'll have to give my parents my passwords for my loan accounts online so they can print the info and drop it off at my (old) work.

POAs are DEFINITELY a good idea for anyone who has someone they can trust to take care of things while they're gone. For anyone who thinks they might owe taxes, it'd probably be a good idea to go the POA route so you don't get hit with the interest and the failure to pay penalty that you'll incur for every month past April 16th you don't pay your total due.

Yes, POAs are a must -- good lookin out, Chelsea. There is a specific form to use for the IRS -- Form 2848. Also keep in mind that some banks will not accept a general POA for an individual to conduct business on your behalf, so you may need to do a specific POA or add them as a joint account holder.
Oh, the joys of being 'cut off' from the world for a few months. :)

Hey everyone! I'm cutting it kind of close by joining this thread so late haha I wasn't sure of my date until recently. Coming in from ft. Lauderdale Florida ( anything over 50 degrees and I'm freezing, I hope Newport is forgiving), SNA, non prior, 22, B.S in pre-law from UCF. Looking forward to the next couple months with you all. Anyone have some info on how the whole uniform situation works? What's the deal with this credit card I keep hearing about?

As far as I understand it, you will be issued everything you need (save underwear, socks, and white t-shirts) and Uncle Sam will take the liberty of going ahead and taking it from your pay. From what I've been told, you will be sized and measured properly for your uniform as well.

You will pay for everything you are issued before you commission. It will all be on account with the uniform store, you can either pay for it with your credit/debit card or open a Star card at the NEX and you will save 10% on all your gear and uniforms.

Hey this got me thinking about my finances and thus my taxes. I know we've already discussed this a little here, but I'm looking at turbotax which claims to be free for active duty personnel up to E-5, and that includes most of us come tax time. Is this going to be a good way to go?

Great info. Thanks! One more question, if we won't have access to our finances how are we supposed to pay off that credit card each month?
