The great NWU's

One would think the burn test would have been part of the original testing years ago before it entered service. Weird.

I don't understand how this is even remotely a surprise to anyone in the process.

Designing a working uniform:
1) Pick appropriate fabric
2) Pick appropriate fabric color
3) Obtain said fabric
4) Turn into garment shaped fabric
5) Add pockets and buttons.
6) Add "bling" - rank tabs, reflective strips, velcro patches, etc.

How exactly does one go about fucking this up?

Just outsource the work to a third world nation or China. ;)

Just another excuse to wear flight suits more often for some of you?

Really though, I would have thought this would have been tested from the git-go.

Note to self, when XO pulls out flame thrower during Department Head meetings, don't be wearing NWU's!

Purchasing/acquisition omitted Step #1 and Big Navy didn't catch it.
or
Step #1 had a deficient Powerpoint presentation.

In either case, a significant amount of money was spent unwisely.

Somehow I am not surprised or shocked as to the shortcomings of the uniform "board"...

You must be referring to the self-described "NUB."

Now I've heard that word "nub" used here and there around the Navy, but not in a good way. Hmm, what does it mean again?? Ah yes, I just remembered. Heh, how fitting.
