T-34 at Chambers

Any idea why it's here? Who's flying it?

I see it beating up the pattern almost daily, still painted in CNATRA colors.

I've asked around and no one seems to know. Curious if anyone on AW has any idea.

Could be CORTRAMID, could also be an Oceana weiner. Both VFA-106 as well as SFWSL share a fleet for currency and range clearing/low safe duty. Many of them are still orange and white in spite of being non-tracom aircraft. I would be willing to bet that if a T-34 guy were going to beat up the pattern for currency, it would be a lot easier at Chambers than Oceana, especially with near constant Hornet/Rhino/COD FCLP's since Fentress is still closed.

TW-5 (historically) does CORTAMID out of Oceana and TW-Corpus flies out of N. Island. I was curious if the T-6s were going up to Oceana this year since the Weiners seem to be pretty much gone from TW-5. The Corpus guys are here at NZY now.

The Weiners at the weapons school in Oceana are painted differently (most of the satellite ones are painted different) than the CNATRA ones.

I suppose it's possible that the CORTRAMID planes moved to Chambers instead of Oceana.

Any TW-5 guys care to comment if they're playing CORTRAMID this year?

I've met some of the instructors here, including an old pal from my time in Corpus. I envy that flying. Maybe I could ask my boss to allow me to fly with them. Fingers crossed?!

I tried here. You have to get permission from CNATRA Actual for an "incentive" ride and I didn't get the email in time. Maybe you can work the "I know you" angle.

Yep. I'm 99.99% certain TW-5 didn't send any T-6s to CORTRAMID. The seat qual is probably what makes it prohibitive.

It's not really any different than any other Mid qual, just one more device. I was ejection seat qual'ed as a mid and the only extra thing they did was put us in the seat and launch us up the rail. Everything else was the same stuff...limited devices (no dunker, no chamber) and mostly swimming and classroom stuff. I can't remember what they used to call it...something like R7/RP7, but it was for observers/press/Mids. They'll have to do something when everyone is flying T-6s, since it's still the "easiest" and cheapest option to give exposure to Mids.

When I was in ROTC, the only MIDS that got qual'd were the ones going on an aviation summer cruise. Qualifying the entire east coast CORTRAMID would be tough. Plus, you can't put them in the front seat because they don't know how to turn the damn thing on and the guy in the back is responsible for the ejection seats.

Not everyone in CORTRAMID is qual'ed. There were many that would just sit there for the two days while everyone else flew. My exposure was to Academy Mids, but the same would happen with the ROTC guys. Some ASTCs would run courses for the CORTRAMID Mids (Miramar apparently does that), but that's NOT for the 1/c Middies. Those have to get their quals on their own.

I don't know the specifics of the T-6, but I'm sure it can be overcome to continue to give exposure flights. There were a couple of things (albeit less critical) that had to be done in the back in the T-34, but your safety checker (a Stash) would take care of those things when you crew swapped.

IP would still sit in front, you would just keep the ISS Mode Selector in Front Command Eject so if the kid pulls, both don't end up leaving the aircraft.
