Belt buckle restoration for khaki uniform

FormerRecruitingGuru

Making Recruiting Great Again
I was wondering if anyone has in the past or currently wear belt buckles that their parents/grandparents wore when they served?

Background: My dad handed me his gold (well, used to be gold) buckle from one of his previous ships and the design looks too good to have it lying around. My plan was to get it restored and wear it when I get to my next command (around December; uniform of the day is khakis mostly).

Of course, I want to see if it's a good idea before taking action.

Thanks for the help!

Any jewelry shop in Bahrain will gladly gold-dip anything you want for a "very special price, my friend."

Other than that, no clue.

I know a place here in San Diego that can do it, within a reasonable price too.

My question is if I'm crossing the toolbag line by wearing it in khakis.

Check the regs ( and your CMDCM), but I think you are only authorized to wear a belt buckle from a previous command.

I don't think it's addressed in uniform regs at all, beyond "gold buckle with khaki'. Command buckles are just traditional...I'm sure if it wasn't such a big thing with the goat locker, too, they'd be bitching and calling O's out about them (see: patches on flight jackets).

What command is the buckle from? Myself, I'd choose to look at it like the students I had who wore Army/Marine unit patches that their siblings were deployed with. If it's obviously something you're not pretending to be or have done, like a CV-2 LEXINGTON or whatever, then I don't see the problem.

"A plain or decorated buckle with appropriate naval insignia, designs, the individual's present command, or if stationed ashore a previous sea command/squadron, or devices to which the wearer is entitled, may be authorized for optional wear."

...I want to see if it's a good idea before taking action.
I think it's a great "head nod" to your father's service, and a nice conversation piece. I'd wear it with pride. I think any reputable jeweler can "buff it up"or otherwise 'restore' it for you.
Cheers...

Yeah, but to honor the OP's post/question, it's not authorized. It's in the uniform regs as to what type of buckle you can wear.

If not for robav8r's answer--which, honestly, is the "most correct" one--IMHO you're not "crossing the toolbag line"* to do something like that to honor your Dad's service.

You should wear it for Dining Outs and Dining Ins... the worst thing that could come of that would be a trip to the grog bowl.

*I like that one. I might use it.

Mess Dress Whites/Blues have no belt or belt loops. Now if you are wearing SDB's or Choker Whites to the above listed functions, then yes, maybe....but not in the Mess Dress uniform.

(I know spoken like a true Hinge :P)

Wasn't trying to be a "Uniform Nazi" here. Just a purveyor of "official" info. If it was my Dad, I'd probably wear it too. :)

Good point, but then again that would imply actually reading and heeding the prescribed uniform for those things... if you're gonna get hit for a uniform violation, better make it a good one! :p
