Question about Future Boards and LORs

I'm going to be taking my ASTB on Aug 2nd and the jobs I'm looking to apply to are: SWO-OCEANO/METOC/SWO. What time frame am I looking at for the next available boards? Also, in the mean time, I'm looking to start getting my LOR's ready. How many am I allowed to submit (I'm current AD Air Force).

The next SWO board is looking like January, the next SWO option board is almost a year off, they identified almost all the goal for SWO Metoc but there is a person selected just for OCEANO/METOC that could take the last SWO METOC spot.

SSgt: This may be a touchy subject, but maybe someday you could share with us what your perceived differences are between what appear to be parallel career tracks in the Navy vs. Air Force? Our weather isn't any better than yours, or any easier to forecast, so I'm assuming it's something else? You have better family housing and golf courses then we will ever have...just saying! (And just kidding about the last part...I'll assume that, while all of that is true, that's not your reason for seeking an IST.)
 
To answer your other question, you can submit as many LORs as you want. O-5 and higher carry weight, even retired members.

Are you asking because you really want to know my answer or are you trying to be sarcastic? I have no issue in answering if it's the first.....

Thank you! One more question....obviously trying to score the highest you can on the ASTB is ideal, but what should I be shooting for to be competitive? I did see the min is 35.

It looked like he was asking why do you find the grass greener with the Navy. Our grass tends to be stained with haze grey and non-skid.
 
It's not that I think the grass is greener at all.... I know what the AF has and I currently work in a joint forces command (where I work along side Naval officers), so I do understand some of the differences.

The truth is I have applied for AF OTS and was a non-select (about 6% selection rate anyways)....at this time there are no future boards that I can apply to and even if there were the weather career field is shut down for at LEAST the next two years. I've been in for 8yrs now and I now have to start making some big decisions. Ultimately my goal has been (ever since I joined) to commission, ideally as a weather officer (the navy gives me three different options to ultimately get to that path, the AF has one). I can't wait around for the Air Force forever, so I'm exploring all the options out there.

Also, I like the fact that the post graduate school is mandatory for weather officers in the Navy, you have a very rare chance of going in the AF.

The selection rate for SWO-OCEANO or straight OCEANO isn't any better, what I have found is the designators with higher age limits also attract more educated people, now that doesn't mean a person can't get picked up without a graduate degree but it can make it harder.

If you are applying for SWO in hopes of changing later what if you can't change? OCEANO is a small field.
 
I understand all of the above, but my chance is 0% if I don't apply. Ultimately my goal is to commission and yes, ideally I'd love to stay in the weather career, but if I commission in another job than that's fine. Hell, I may end up liking that job better. As I mentioned before, there are no future AF boards, which mean my chances for AF, at this point in time, is 0%. So, I'm exploring other options.

Really want to know. Can't be plainer than that. I appreciate what you've already done for your country, and am interested to understand Navy motivations. Nothing more than that.
