OK, I got a couple really nice pictures last week. One a gift the other something to flip. Needless to say I think I might have something special but I don't know.

The artist is "William S. Phillips"

"Sierra Hotel" is the name of the print

Under the S is a cross or plus

To the right of his signature is "ASAA"


Is this an artist proof, or first run of some sort? It does NOT have a number BUT it does have a certificate of registration. Any idea of what it might be? It was framed at great expense at a frame shop in Arlington, I have found them on line unframed without the added ASAA and + for $400.00. What did I slop into??

Oh yeah, I cheated. Wife bought me the last one. For those of you that weren't born yet the last was on the original Roosevelt CVA-42. A BEAUTIFUL oil painting that adorns my living room wall by Tony Fachet.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to hear but the + and initials after the signature are whats throwing me. The framer is still in business, I may give them a shout tomorrow.

CVA-42 = Roosevelt. There is no mistaking that ship according to both my memory and island markings. Maybe the phantom was doing quals. My picture of it does it no justice, the original shows the 42 much better through the steam.

The framing company emailed me back this morning, nice people! As a added bonus I looked at it again there IS in fact a faint handwritten signature AND it IS numbered on the opposite side! 441/1250!

This is what the framer said:


"I am fairly certain that it is a numbered print. Often it is difficult to see, since it is written in pencil and is usually in the image
area in a bottom corner.
I am not sure what the + or S is.
The "ASAA" probably stands for "American Society of Aviation Artists".
It appears to be framed with a suede fabric mat and a wood fillet. The frame is not one that is still available. Comparable
framing today would probably be in the $550.00 to $600.00 range.
You may be able to get further information from the publisher, "The Greenwich Workshop", at 800 243-4246 ."
