Interesting because I know that there are fixes being mentioned, like losing internal aux tank and putting an external drop tank on the starboard side to specifically solve this problem (when you pickle the tow it will also pickle the tank making you single engine throughout everything but the stream.)The fact that going OEI during tow ops would always result in loss of the helo was too much to take - the admiral said almost exactly that.
I haven't heard that fact mentioned yet. Maybe an interesting idea... of course it sounds like a good deal, so I would guess the Navy would look at sea-swap of crews on the same airframes (and rotate the airframes out every 12-18 months) rather than move a whole squadron to Rota.

Ahh, the sea-swap. An idea that has failed before and will no doubt continue to fail in the future.
I hate that word.Did for two HH-60H in PACOM... It had some challenges!
Bad gouge that's been floating out there for some time. When you're towing in a 60 your pitch attitude is fairly level. Your groundspeed will depend which mode of the sonar you're using, so it depends. The funny thing with towing is that your best case in regards to headwinds is mutually exclusive with your worst case.Aren't you about 15 degrees nose down and below translational lift airspeed while towing? If so, jettisoning the sled and tank will result in just a smaller splash!
I'm outing myself here, but whatever - that was me.Not a planted question, unless the mind control rays are working again. I definitely took inspiration from the helo CAG discussion here.
You asked the admiral my noobie question? Bwahaha.
Probably not, because the DDGs going to Rota are all older Flight I-types with no helo hangar. So, I guess they'd just put a single LAMPS-like squadron in there.

Just curious, and not to go into too much detail with this, but why can't a 60 tow it and then if you lose an engine or whatever, jettison the cargo? I would understand if it were beyond the structural or weight capability of the aircraft, but from what was said it sounded more like an emergency situation would result in loss of the aircraft.
