By MIDS you mean Link-16? So.....the 60 can be in the Link? And receive tasking via the Link. And do all that Link kind of stuff. Why does an F/A-18 need Link-16?

Lots of different reasons.....one that could apply to both helos as well as Hornets is just keeping SA of a big formation of aircraft, or just using it to keep SA of a wingman. Other uses we have are probably not for the open-source interwebs, but it is a very valuable tool at our disposal. Just wondering if there were mission related tasks that Link-16 helps out with. And yes, by MIDS I meant Link-16
Yes. There's actually one or more OPLAN's utilizing helos where L16 would greatly increase SA and increase mission effectiveness. Of course, we can't discuss them here.
We use it for all the same reasons. Helos do more than just right hand turns in the D. And, like MB said, even if we're in the D, it can help us to get your dry quicker.
Cool, makes sense gents. It just piqued my attention when someone mentioned that Link-16 in the -60 was going to be a game changer, and I was curious how so.......totally understand if it isn't something to talk about here, I'll ask one of my -60 friends about it sometime.
My buddy at my last squadron deployed with the Romeos. Honestly, I think the biggest use of L16 was that they could send prank photos to one another. But let's not let that get in the way of "operational needs."
Is HM the same as the c-2 for helos? I'm in this guys same position.. The one navy 53 guy we have here says he loved it flying the 53 and recommends it 100%. It seems like there is a good quality of life with a lot of ways to make extra cash. I just wonder if you get enough flight time to make it worth not going 60's, cause those are new. I wonder with the new threat from iran if maybe they will get the new model now.
I'm not an HM guy, but I work with a bunch of them. HM guys love their community and the BIG IRON. As an outside observer, it seems that the Big Iron is broke a lot and they spend a lot of time FCFing and tend to leave their fleet tours with fewer hours than 60 drivers. They det out to a lot of interesting spots. The mission is very esoteric. Yes, you'll do PMC since the shitter is a big empty box, but the MH-53E exist to do AMCM, which can be like mowing your gigantic lawn with a helo.

Oh great another thread for people to post "Anything but HSC. Sierras are gay". Or "HSL Mayport is EVERYONE's last choice. Flying shoes over there". If you want to phrase a question more along the lines of "what do you like about your community?", I think that'd foster a better discussion. As someone close to wings, I'll say this thread has been very, very helpful. However, I know I'm going to sound like a moron here, but what's SSC?
The other question I have that's been touched on lightly here is about carrier life as a helo pilot. I originally came into the HT's hoping to select HSM, partially because I had heard in the VTs that being on a carrier is a bad time as a helo guy, but I've run across (the only) one HS instructor in my squadron who actually deployed on carriers and he loved it. Can anyone shed (current) pros and cons about small boys/carrier life/amphib life?
For the most part, I think I'm leaning towards asking for HSC because the expeditionary missions sound sweet, the possibility of being in a det in Sicily or Bahrain, the HSC instructors in my squadron can't stop raving about VERTREP, the missions around Guam sound like a blast, etc. etc. As I said, I originally came in wanting HSM because I thought the maritime warfare (ASW/ASUW, small boys, the awesome avionics, etc.) component sounded sweet, but speaking with guys in the long, long, long FRS there who aren't enjoying it and the systems heavy knowledge (which, I'll admit, does intimidate me... while I've gotten by just fine, I never felt as comfortable on a systems test or brief compared to anything regarding flying) combined with the fact there are literally no HSM instructors in the HT's (just HSL guys), my opinion has at least started leaning towards HSC. The HSL instructors have, by any large suggested to select coast over platform, while the HSC instructors have 100% said to beg and plead if I have to to get HSC, suggesting to me they loved their mission while the HSL guys didn't as much.
