I noticed that the 4 flyover a/c for the Bears-Seahawks game yesterday were F-18s

Does anyone know for sure & where they were from? They looked like C models (couldn't see a notch on the leading-edge of the front wings), but am not sure. NBD.

Look like Rhinos. The Packers post which squadron is doing it on their website, guess Chicago's too cool for that. A few weeks ago some VMFA Hornets from Miramar did the flyover at Lambeau and they had maintainers from Wisconsin that came along and got in at field level. Good stuff.

Isn't the 1000/250 a Navy rule based on FAA standards? I've seen several AF units with standing FAA waivers for lower flybys.

Correct. If you call the FAA they will likely let you exceed the 250 kt restriction, but they'll stick firm to the 1000 feet minimum. Definitely call them first.

When I called them they seemed confused by the speed request. "you're military, right? Then we don't care about speed. Just keep it above 1000'".

That's not what the book says, so better safe than sorry. Call first.

If you blast by "well below" 1000' or ridiculously beyond 250kts (i.e. Transonic), then stand by for the pain.

What defines "well below" and "ridiculously beyond"?

I can't say. I'm sure your skipper will be happy to define it for you after the fact.

The AF flybys are always better than the Navy. They dont get their wings yanked if they go below 1000' and over 250kts. I did the FL/GA flyby this year and while the timing was spot on, still got the "you should have seen these AF dudes a couple weeks ago." The Navy has gotten waaaayyyyy to PC. My hope is that one day our leadership will remember what they did when they were JO's. We cant fart these days without getting reprimanded. I'm not talking about being a complete idiot at 100' and 6 bills but 1000' and 250? Anyway.

Best flyover I ever saw was a Navy A-4 my freshman year at A&M.

The Parents Weekend march-in, with all of us at attention, the dude had to climb to get over the scoreboard, then did an aileron roll over the stadium at better than 5 bills.

Scared the shit out of everybody, but it was AWESOME.

He's probably an admiral now enforcing the 250kt/1000' rule.

Or he got out as a LT and is flying for an airline right now.

Either way, it's a sad statement about Naval Aviation.

Going to piggy-back this forum. I attend FSU and we had an F-18 fly-by for the Miami game in 2009. It was done by the same squadron the Scott Speicher was in. Were any of you guys part of that fly-by by chance? (I know this was a year and a half ago but I figure I'd take a shot at it).

Going to piggy-back this forum. I attend FSU and we had an F-18 fly-by for the Miami game in 2009. It was done by the same squadron the Scott Speicher was in (first casualty of Persian Gulf in 1991, Marine F-18 pilot). Were any of you guys part of that fly-by by chance? (I know this was a year and a half ago but I figure I'd take a shot at it).

Little FYI, probably not necessary to state who Scott Speicher is on a Naval Aviation board, and if you do, get your facts straight. He wasn't a Marine.

I didn't know how fresh it still was, so I apologize. I thought I remember them saying at the ceremony he was a marine, which it would have been easier to research so apologies again.
